My definition of one trick pony is Kotoshogiku, Kotoyuki (although he tried an henka or two this time), Gagamaru, etc.. I did say "a bit" Last basho I did an analysis of Kisenosato's kimarite which showed he won over 60% of his matches with just a couple of techniques, hence my comment. It is in the comments thread for the last basho if you are interested

BTW the bout looked very close. Ami even may have won. It is apparent to me that Ura can't use his left hand effectively. rhyen 1,809 Posted November 22, 2016 Wow, Sokokurai just played his henka card in that matta. And Ishiura is slowly perfecting the Harumafuji henka.

He may have picked it as a joke or for real. He's looking like a genius. Edited November 22, 2016 by robnplunder

Are these guys going to even make an effort against him? The last 2 bouts have been jokes.

Come to think of it, you are right. The last two opponents didn't know what was coming. That bodes well for Ishiura. His opponents won't know if Ishiura is going to henka, bowl them over, or do something else.

robnplunder 974 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) That was a blinded charge by Takanoiwa against Arawashi's henka. On slow-mo, I saw takanoiwa's eyes closed at tachi-hai. Well, it's a henka fest. When Yokozuna does it, why not? [ Sarcasm ] Edited November 22, 2016 by robnplunder

How much are these people paying to watch a guy avoid doing what they paid to watch him do?
robnplunder 974 Posted November 22, 2016 I don't like henka fest either. IMO, upper rank rikishi need to set the example. That's why I came down hard on Yokozunas doing henka. A timely boo by the crowd on blatant henka would help. Rikishi themselves should be aware of possible henka attempt and make the opponent pay.
Rocks 1,807 Posted November 22, 2016 The crowd always refuses to applaud. the announcer even asked about the henka in the post interview. I mean Ishiura at least has an excuse. He knows he'd lose to most of these guys straight up. Anybody that falls for it against him is just an idiot. But what the hell is the excuse for a young guy of decent height and weight? Rocks 1,807 Posted November 22, 2016 I don't speak Japanese but I know when they bring it up it's always in a negative context. Mostly "Why did you do that?" Nice blatant choke hold by by Tamawashi there against kasei too. What the heck did they put in the drinking water today?
Benihana 1,901 Posted November 22, 2016 That choking pissed me off. With an "open" hand, like Harumafuji does it, it's ok, but that was far from it. WHEEEEEEEEE! Kisenosato! I told you, Hakuho is still desparately searching for his mojo.
robnplunder 974 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) Wow, the match of the day so far - Kise vs fHakuho. Kise almost lost about 4 times before pulling off a win. That was awesome. Hakuho wasn't himself. Otherwise, he would have finished Kise in any of the 4 times. Was Tamawashi's choking legal? It must be. Shinpan/Judges did nothing about it. Rocks 1,807 Posted November 22, 2016 Yes, Hakuho is definitely off. Well at least all the Ozeki and Yokozuna had good bouts today.

After I first saw his body (form) this yusho i knew he wouldn't steam roll everyone. I just hope its because of the injurie and lack of training, and not because age is catching up to him. : / It maybe sounds weird, but during his bout today i once again realised how much i missed him. (altho harumafuji still is my fav)

Dwale 419 Posted November 22, 2016 Kisenosato v Hakuho. Woo, boy. Woooooo boy. I need a cigarette after that one, wow! The fans got their money's worth today, for sure. That bout was so good, it's eclipsed the rest of the matches for the day. I'm going to need to re-watch after this cloud brings me back down to earth. But, a few thoughts... Terunofuji, as I've been saying, MUST learn an effective defense against the moro-zashi, else he will never fulfill his potential. Kakuryu, to his credit, exploited this weakness in an intelligent manner, refusing to let Terunofuji counter, biding his time and waiting for the right moment. Smart sumo from him. There's no question in my mind he's the favorite for the yusho now. But, let's not go giving him the cup just yet; he has some tough matches ahead. Ishiura still shoveling coal into the boiler of his hype train. I had guessed 11 wins for him this basho, but now I'm beginning to wonder if I lowballed him. Can't even get excited by Kotoyuki's win, as both he and Yoshikaze are, shall we say, not at their best.

Tsubame 356 Posted November 22, 2016 What will happen if Goeido will finish 12-3J this basho (and with doing so, he would have beaten the yusho winner, which is - I guess - either Harumafuji or Kakuryu) to his promotion discussion? Will this result be sufficient for a direct promotion or "just" extent his tsuna run to the next basho?
