Basho Talk - Kyushu Basho 2016 ** (SPOILERS)

Recommended Posts

Since one hasn't been started yet.

I've been trying to catch it live, but the streaming is terrible for me at the moment.

Post live thoughts here :)

EDIT - Just noticed that Ichinojo lost. I only know by the text. Since I have to wait for videos (or NHK highlights), how did he look?

Wow, Harumafusi got upset.   I didn't see that coming.

I thought Kakuryu was Mitakeumi's best shot at beating an Yokozuna.  Kak beat him easily, clearly showing the difference between Zuna and Komu.

Goeido looks strong still.  Could he get another basho?   I say he has a good chance with a little help from others.

Endo didn't look sharp today.

Komusubi can't get a kinboshi. Only maegashira can.

Not great. But if he has a couple of buggered discs in his back as reported he will probably never look great again

It looked to me as if Harumafuji was kind of knocked out by the initial head (temple?) bonk at the tachi-ai which cost him balance and coordination, and ultimately, the bout.

I forgot that and fixed my post.   Thanks.

Ura in defeat looked healthy, and heavier.

Ichinojo didn't look good in defeat.   He looked lighter but that didn't do much to his quickness, or strength.   I suspect his back may be not 100%.   If so, he may end up Juryo in the next basho.

Not much to say, this is pretty standard for day one. Most of my pet rikishi are looking decent.

Favorite win of the day: Tamawashi. Came out of nowhere and won with serious authority. Kotoshogiku's would be a close second.

Say what you will about his opponent but Yoshikaze showed some serious strength. :-)

yeah, of course, yoshikaze is allways ready for it! just saying, kind of a bit sad seeing a great potential like terunofuji loosing that much:s

I have to agree. Terunofuji has (or at least had) the knack, in addition to a great body, but he's been consistently mediocre ever since that explosive ascent. Wish someone could tell me what has happened, because the thought of all that potential being lost makes me, yes, sad.

And this isn't to take anything away from Yoshikaze, who is a fierce and game competitor and a lot of fun to watch.

He's been injured for multiple basho's now and refuses to take time off and fix it. That's the issue.

Quick thoughts for today:

- Terunofuji is getting demoted. He's only working on one leg. Really hoping he just takes time off and heals up before he becomes another Ichinojo.

- Okinoumi's opponent took a huge fall today.

- I feel like the other wrestlers have figured Ura out now.

I'd heard that, but wasn't sure if it was fact or rumor. Well, I do know he had surgery on his...what was that, his collarbone? Shoulder? I don't recall.

But, if it's A) a physica issue and B) something that he can fix, then I think even if he falls back down the ranks, he would fight his way back up very quickly once he was well.

I believe Kinta said Ura is injured still. But, I would think there's some truth to what you said, whether it's an issue of their having learned his style or else their simply knowing how to handle it.

I have no doubt he could get back up. Guess he just doesn't want lose the cash.

He was hobbling slightly.   I.e, he looks to be still injured.   It's not looking good for him.  He will lose his Ozeki rank.

He should get completely better and bounce back, I hope Toyonoshima can! It's silly to keep this up, go kadoban and for what? He's never going to get all the wins he needs like this, and then he might injure himself more and be done.

I quite like that there is a rikishi in Jonokuchi named Miura (jk16e), like the Lamborghini!

I thought Takayasu looked very good against Endo.

Or, Endo didn't look like himself was in the last basho.  It could be my imagination but Endo looked quicker in similar situation in the last basho.   Quicker off tachi-hai and stronger after it.  But this is just the 1st match.  Let's see what he does, and Takaysu, too.

He did, but I was worried about a let down or nerves from Taka but he looked good. If he doesn't get those 12 wins he needs I don't think it will be from bad form or lack of trying.

I don't understand that statement. Okinoumi's opponent was Hakuho. Since it took about two seconds for Hakuho to defeat him, I would say that it was Okinoumi who took the huge fall.

I agree.   Okinoumi went down quickly.  It was one-sided.
