Student yokozuna 2016

Recommended Posts

is Turbold - and this time as 4th year he HAS to use the MsTD and enter ozumo for Haru - maybe he makes it to amateur yokozuna again to have it ms10TD.

Final Turbold-Onami - SF Turbold-Murata, Onami-Osanai

QF Osanai-Furukawa(3), Onami-Miwa, Turbold-Yago, Murata-Katamura(3)

This year they all have sdTD qualifications, and except for the 2 with (3) all are in the last year and might use them

Runner-up Onami (179cm, 110kg) is happy about the result. He's from a sumo family: grandson of komusubi Wakabayama, his 2 elder brothers Onami and Goshi are in Arashio-beya, the father was a rikishi as well. Asked if he plans to use the entry card to sandanme TD: "I haven't thought about anything yet. First of all the team event." http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20161105/sum16110520120008-n1.html

A similar answer came from Turbold in the NHK interview.

Onami happy about the sf win

Onami's father is not a son of former Wakabayama but his mother is Wakabayama's daughter.

Incidentally his father、Masashi Onami, was former Makushita 51 Wakashinobu and now operates Chanko Wakabayama in Fukushima City, where the new recruit is from.

Turbold is the 2nd foreigner to win the student title after Luis Gou Ikemori from Brasil in 1990. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20161106/k00/00m/050/099000c

Turbold (187cm, 183kg) still is plagued by back pain, which started at the championships 2 years ago. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1734154.html

IMHO, Turbold did just enough to win.   I was expecting him to dominate.

A couple of my favorites were knocked off early.  :'-(

Not like yesterday Toyo-dai vs Nichi-dai (only those were in the semis, and 2 more from Nichidai in the qf): It was Kindai vs. Toyodai and Toyo-dai got the team title, after 3 years again. Onami won the last and deciding bout.

another angle and longer (same channel as below)

SF: Kindai vs. Nittaidai - Toyodai vs. Chudai

QF - Toyodai-Meidai, Chudai-Takudai

Nittaidai-Nichidai (not in the sf after 26 years again), Kindai-Tonodai

Turbold Back problem can be a concern entering pro sumo. His compatriot Ichinojo has chronic back pain that is getting more and more of a problem.
But i can't wait to see him next march if he enters pro sumo.

The runner up Onami was very exciting to watch !!

Turbold's body shape will likely lead to all kind of issues through his career.   The guy is tall but a lot of his body weight is around his belly.   That can't be good for his back.

Congrats to Turbold, he's arguably been the best college rikishi this year. Looking forward to see if he can defend his amateur title in a month's time.

It was also nice to see Toyo University winning the team event. They've been able to assemble a talented group of rikishi in their club over the past few years, and the results are speaking for themselves.

Does Turbold seem to be doing the arm slap downs more than in the past (admittedly I don't have much past footage to go by)? I'm excited to see him in ozumo.

Onami was fun to watch, and he seemed to take the loss well.

He will likely continue the Mongolian domination of Ozumo after Haru, Kak, and Hak retire.

Right, because they dominated student championships as well...

Not to mention the awesome track record of recent collegiate rikishi at the very top of the banzuke.

Right.   They come into Ozumo with tons of top level experience, and ready to do well: Shodai, Mitakeumi, Endo, Ishiura, Hotukofuji, Ura, ....   I'd love to see more top University rikishi to join Ozumo.

Indeed, they've been doing so well that the most recent university graduate to make it to ozeki was in the class of 1999. That was practically yesterday.

Your statement implies that the measure of success for a university graduate is Ozeki.  I think anyone who enters ozumo and makes it to Juryo is a success.  Certainly anyone who stays in the top two divisions long enough to be eligible to purchase a kabu is a success.

It is when we're talking about the likelihood of some collegiate guy serving as the successor to Hakuho et al..

Who, if anyone, is a potential successor to Hakuho?  With the exception of Terunofuji, Mitakeumi and Shodai are there any potential Yokozuna in ozumo?

Who's saying about Turbold being a successor to Hakuho?   I was just saying Turbold appears to be heir apparent to Mongolian dominance.  Add other young Mongolian riksishi in Makuuchi and we have the Mongolian dominance continuing for foreseeable future.

So I guess you just meant that Turbold will be part of the Mongolian domination in the same way that Arawashi and Takanoiwa are, or something, when you indicated that he'll be "continuing" what the current three yokozuna are doing. Or maybe you're just randomly stringing words together in your posts and coherent arguments have been made optional.

This.   I don't have the same command of the written English like you have, which often leads to edit my own posts.
