Ryoshishokunin 261 Posted November 19, 2016 Kise vs. Kotoyuki today why I got off the train a couple days ago--I didn't think they'd do that to themselves. Sigh. 9 Endo.

Gurowake 3,915 Posted November 19, 2016 (edited) Kisenosato vs. Kotoyuki shows us one of two things: 1) They don't look at the available sanyaku-maegashira matches at all when deciding which intrasanyaku matches to do. This "mistake" could easily have been avoided by choosing a different O vs. O match (and I was working under the assumption it would be Goeido vs. Kisenosato), or even having Harumafuji vs. Takayasu (as rare as having all 4 junior sanyaku against upper sanyaku on the same day is, it's usually because it's very difficult to actually pull off - but here it was manageable). 2) They intentionally try to arrange things so that one Ozeki ends up facing someone one rank beyond what he normally would, but not through the means of having him actually bypass someone who's available and a reasonable opponent but by simply having the scheduling of the sanyaku matches force them into it like we see here. I don't know if #2 is correct, but it certainly seems that way as it seems to happen quite a lot. On the other hand, when I was working on my torikumi algorithm, the naive assignment of maegashira matches after sanyaku matches tended to lead to one such hole appearing in an Ozeki's schedule. I then worked in a method of switching matches around to fill the holes, assuming that the Kyokai planned things out so that it wouldn't happen, but lately that seems to be a very bad assumption. Of course, that's not relevant to this game, but I think posting the above in the general basho talk thread wouldn't be as appropriate. -- 9.
