Guess Kisenosato's Aite (M3W Shodai) - November 2016

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

It has been a long time since we had a komusubi as the target pick, and a much longer time since we had a low joi-jin rikishi as the target pick, so please put in order the following three choices in order of your preference....

K1E Mitakeumi

M3E Endo

M3W Shodai

interesting choice shodai

he is just 17th in line.....is that a joi-jin?....should only come into play of the sanyaku if there are bouts missing due to same-heya-rule

Agreed, but there are a few same-heya rikishi above him, and so he should meet at least one Yokozuna, so doesn't that make him 'joi-jin'?

Edit:  Found this definition.  I would not say that it is definitive, but it goes along with my suggestion that a rikishi that should meet at least one Yokozuna can be considered joi-jin....

Luckily, it does not include Ozekis.   If it did, look at this extreme case.  Back in November 1993, there were so many Futagoyama rikishi, (two Ozekis, a Sekiwake, a Komusubi and four Maegashira rikishi ranked M1-M5)), plus a kyujo rikishi ranked at M4W, that if the joi-jin included rikishi that faced Ozekis, the joi-jin would have gone all the way down to M8E Mainoumi!!!  But the Futagoyama factor did often mean that the joi-jin (rikishi facing Yokozunas) often went to M5, at least....

Please don't do that!  :-( It's a pain for me to work out the top pick, if people do not stick to the simple ranking....

Time to set up the game....

I make it Shodai a slight victor over Endo.

I think that means this will be a very interesting basho, as Shodai is (as Gernobono pointed out above), the 17th highest ranked player at the start of the basho.....

Announcing the November 2016 edition of Guess Kisenosato's Aite.... But for M3W Shodai....

All you have to do is guess M3W Shodai's opponent each day, before the torikumi comes out. If you guess correctly, you get a shiroboshi. This is surprisingly more fun (or frustrating) and challenging than it should be. It also gets you to think a bit more about the 'inner-workings' of sumo.

Here is the current banzuke:-

Jakusotsu (Y1E 8-7) Y1 Kuroimori (O1E 12-2-1)

Gurowake (O2W 11-4O1 Andonishiki (O1W 8-7)

Ryoshishokunin (K1E 7-7-1) S1 chishafuwaku (O2E 6-9)

McBugger (M1W 8-7) K1 Gernobono (K1W Kosho)

Jejima (M1E 7-8)        K2

orandashoho (M2E 8-7) M1 Tenshinhan (S1E 6-9)

Profomisakari (S1W 5-10) M2 Kaiomitsuki (M2W Kosho)

shimodahito (M3E 5-10) M3 PhorCillic (M4E 5-6-4)

The Kyokai (M4W 0-15) M4

Comments:

Jakusotsu (although continuing his long KK streak) has once again missed out on getting an Ozeki Quality Performance. This is now becoming something of concern.  We strongly urge him to strive to challenge for the yusho in September. ;-)

Kuroimori is a shin-Yokozuna.  We hope he will continue the impressivesumo that led to his promotion.

chishafuwaku was kadoban, but went MK. He has been demoted to Sekiwake.  If he has an OQ performance in November, he will return to the Ozeki rank, 'the easy way'.

Shin-Ozeki Gurowake ended this past basho with a jun-yusho.  He has won the previous two yushos. He will be considered for promotion to Yokozuna if he wins the yusho in November (and might be considered with a very good Jun-Yusho play-off).

The rules are as follows:-
1. Guess M3W Shodai's opponents on each day of the basho.
2. Entries need to be in before 11:30 am Japan time on the previous day, except for the days 1 and 2 entries which need to be in before 11:30 am Japan time on the Friday prior to the start of the basho. If it turns out that the daily toriukumi is printed before these times, then any entry proved to have come afterwards is not allowed for that day (so enter early to be safe).
3. Tie-breakers to decide the Yusho.... We look at the result of the day 15 prediction, then day 14, and so on back to day 1. If still a tie, then the highest ranked on the banzuke can claim the Yusho.
4. If Shodai goes kyujo during the basho, we switch to M3E Endo (M2W Yoshikaze, then M2E Kaisei kept further in reserve, if needed due to a mass spate of kyujos) for the days after his fusensho loss (I.e. we can still guess who gets the freebie). For the immediate day afterwards, (unless it is known very soon after the event), everyone will get a 'kyujo'.
5. Players that are leading the Yusho race (especially in the final few days of the basho), are requested / expected to get their picks in very early (before all the other players, if possible) - in order to avoid suspicions of 'tactical picking'.

Special prizes (many thanks to Yaochoyama):

1. Outstanding performance (shukun-sho) - the one who correctly picks the aite the most consecutive days. You have to have a minimum of three to win this prize.

2. Fighting spirit (kanto-sho) - the one who limits their incorrect aite picks to the shortest number of consecutive days (literally the one whose longest losing streak is the shortest). Any losing streak of 5 or more days would disqualify you from this prize.

3. Technique (gino-sho) - the one who is best at making correct picks when no one, or hardly anyone else does. A point system is used as follows and you need at least 3 points to claim this prize:

3 points if you're the only win to make the correct pick
2 points if you're one of two to make the correct pick
1 point if you're one of three to make the correct pick

New players ((Order, order!)) are cordially invited to this game - it is an official second league © game!

Joining the obvious train for days 1-2:

Day 1 - Kotoyuki

Day 2 - Chiyotokuni

I will try to remember to play this every day before the torikumi comes out. That was always my biggest problem with this game.
