Bench Sumo news

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am pleased to announce that Taka did the bare minimum (he ended the basho with an 8-7), to meet the usual bench sumo guidelines of 30 wins over three bashos, with the last ranked at Sekiwake.

He therefore becomes the 32nd Ozeki of Bench Sumo.  He is from the Sumo Forum Ichimon.  We hope that he will give some words to mark his promotion.

Hi everyone!

Here are the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2019 after the March 2019 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from May 2018 to March 2019.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after January 2019) - Rank on the March 2019 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 6 bashos - (points gain from after March 2019, basically March 2019 minus March 2018).

Bill holds onto to top spot - and actually increases his lead by quite a bit.

Kintamayama is the only entrant to the top 10.

Over-and-out!

It’s bench stats update time, once again.  I’ve updated all my stats pages with the results of the Haru basho.  As is usual, you can find the stats at  My site  by selecting the “Misc. Bench Stats” in the menu.

I can’t recall adding any new stats, that haven’t already been announced.  I will have a shiny new update in the next few days to the Ranks Stats page to help Jejima figure out who is at their high ranks, though.  Stay tuned.

Hi all!

Here are the possible 'milestones' for Bench Sumo players for the May basho.

A big shout-out to Takanorappa and his Bench Sumo stat page that made this email possible.

All the good stuff can be found here -->  <http://www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm>

There are five parts....

1. The players at a new career high rank.

2. The number of active bashos (multiples of 10) - *if* the player turns up in May.

3. Players who have a chance (even if very remote) of going to a new 'multiple of 100' career wins in May.

4. The current #20 leaderboard for the *all-time* total number of wins.

5. The current #20 leaderboard for the highest win percentage for *active* players.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

Here are the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2019 after the May 2019 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from July 2018 to May 2019.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after March 2019) - Rank on the May 2019 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 6 bashos - (points gain from after May 2019, basically May 2019 minus May 2018).

Flohru and Bill swap places at the top - and Flohru now has a massive lead!  Taka and Ihopeso are the new entrants to the top 10.

Over-and-out!

Hi everyone!

Here is the new banzuke for July, put together very quickly (but thoroughly) by Jejima, Flohru and Kaiomitsuki (Ekigozan, Kintamayama and Asashosakari looking on).

Although Leonishiki has announced his intai, we were already well on our way to making the new banzuke, so we have decided to include him on this one.

For a change, the new banzuke was fairly straight forward to put together - and there is little bad or good luck.

One note regarding the new sanyaku. It is one of the Bench banzuke making guidelines that we strive to have exactly 8 sanyaku members when possible. Part of this guideline says that a M1W with 8-7 can be denied promotion (as can a M3 with 9-6, a M5 with 10-5 etc).  In close decisions, we usually favour East side over West side and the better results in the basho. It is for these reasons that Rubensan is the unlucky rikishi to be denied a Komusubi slot.

Enjoy!

Congrats to Jejima for becoming the new all-time wins leader for Bench Sumo. If I read the stats correctly, he surpassed Kintamayama on Day 15 of this basho, now leading 882 to 881.

Really?

That was the day when I went head-to-head with Kintamayama on the Bench dohyo. If I had known prior to the bout that it would decide who would lead the number of all-time wins, I would certainly have mentioned it!

Dear all,

I have received the message below from Marushiki, the esteemed chair of the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council.

Jejima (BS rijicho)

Venerable Rijicho

The BSYDC has met and discussed the performance of Flohru for the Natsu Basho 2019. We congratulate him. He had an excellent Basho and performed well.

After much discussion, (and a party in honour of Leonishiki's long service to the YDC, and sad retirement), we would like to offer congratulations on a score fitting of a high-ranked rikishi.  After going Kadoban in the previous Basho, we based our thoughts focusing on the May Basho.

We offer much encouragement and would love to see what will happen in July.   After the July Basho we will again meet to discuss the possibility of promotion to the top rank.

I am sending this by smartphone from a village in the Philippines. So little comment, as  I am also trying to keep my two boys out of mischief.

The banzuke was made by Flohru (who did most of the work this time), Kaiomitsuki and Jejima, with the usual crew watching.

Norizo has been repromoted to Ozeki, 'the easy way'.

There are some ridiculous amounts of good luck in places, and bad luck in others.

Well here it is!

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

Here are the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2019 after the July 2019 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from September 2018 to July 2019.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after May 2019) - Rank on the July 2019 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 6 bashos - (points gain from after July 2019, basically July 2019 minus July 2018).

There are no changes among the top four positions. Rubensan is the only new entry to the top ten, coming in at joint number 6. Konosato also makes a big move up the standings - but land up just outside the top 10.

Over-and-out!

Hi all!

Here are the possible 'milestones' for Bench Sumo players for the Aki (September) basho 2019 - TWENTY YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!

A big shout-out to Takanorappa and his Bench Sumo stat page that made this email possible.

All the good stuff can be found here -->  <http://www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm>

There are five parts....

1. The players at a new career high rank.

2. The number of active bashos (multiples of 10) - *if* the player turns up in September (it's the 20th anniversary - everyone should be there!).

3. Players who have a chance (even if very remote) of going to a new 'multiple of 100' career wins in September.

4. The current #20 leaderboard for the *all-time* total number of wins.

5. The current #20 leaderboard for the highest win percentage for *active* players.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

It is the 20th anniversary of Bench Sumo!

Let's mark this special occasion by having lots of daily day-to-day gyojis. Former d2d gyojis, current d2d gyojis and those who have always thought about being a d2d gyoji, please consider offering your services.

Trivia question - Who was the first ever day-to-day gyoji? (other than myself)

Let me know which day(s) you are available, how many days that you would like/can take, and if you have any preference in regards to division.

Jejima (20 years of BS and counting)
