Bench Yokozuna promotion

A Bench Yokozuna hopeful must have won at least one Bench Makunouchi Yusho at some stage in the past. The general guidelines are that the normal minimum requirement for promotion should be two consecutive Jun-Yushos, whilst at the rank of Ozeki (provided that they have previously won a Makunouchi Yusho.)

The Rijicho (currently Jejima),will ask the chair of the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council to convene a meeting. In general, this will be after an Ozeki has just won a Yusho, or good Jun-Yusho.

The Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council currently consists of Marushiki (as the esteemed chair), Hakaso, Leonishiki, Sherlockiama and Sakana.

Chocshoporyu has also never won the Bench Makunouchi Yusho.  In fact he has never won any yusho in any division in Bench Sumo...

As is usual, lately, I've added a couple of new stats (which now number over 50 different stat categories):

• Yusho & Jun-Yusho List:  This one goes beyond totals.  You now see the basho and score for all the Ys & J-Ys.  Filterable by Basho, Shikona, Y/J-Y and active (note: still working the "unhide" part of those filters, but it is workable)
• BSer GBLs Won/Lost:  Delving deeper into GBLs, you can see how many times you've won or lost with a GBL of a certain type.  Did the torikumi-makers conspire against you to thwart your 10-winner?  Find out here.
• Banzuke/Individual Records:  You may recall that I released this gem during the basho (this is my favorite page, right now). It details all the final records for each basho, who you can see your record, or make a banzuke.  It also has your hoshitori for each record, so you can see details in that, too.  New, though, I added in the number of consecutive wins & losses per basho.  All of this is searchable, and sortable, so you can find out if you've ever pulled out 8-in-a-row to save a KK or not.
• I've also added tooltips to many of the pages, so you get a bit more detail as you hover over a column heading.  (That is a work in progress, as I add to all pages).

Non-stat related, I also went into the wayback machine, and archived the old Bench Sumo Rules site.  You can see the rules, as they existed at the end of life of our old production server (2011) by selecting the Bench Sumo Rules in the menu.  Note that these rule are just as they were in 2011.  Some things don't apply anymore (like the gyoji site).  I've updated links to reference Doitsuyama's site, where applicable.

Hi, all.  In a frenzy of bench activity, I've also updated my stats site to include the recent Aki basho, and the new Kyushu banzuke.

The only item that I didn't touch was the bench salaries.  Sorry.  Take your complaint to the BS Kyokai Finance Department. :-) 

The Salaries page take upwards of 30 database queries to calculate,  and I just could squeeze in the time.  Monday, perhaps.

 

The new stat is all about you (well, and them).  BSers Firsts lists all the stats related to you first "whatever" in Bench Sumo.

Here are the full results for the year.  It is a little more complicated than usual, in order to compare to the final results for 2017 - as well as comparing to the results after September 2018.

 

REMEMBER regular brackets (   ) relate to last basho.  Curly brackets {   }  refer to last year {2017}.

 

So, it reads like this.

 

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after September 2018) - {comparison to 2017 final position} - Rank on the November 2018 banzuke - {Rank on the November 2017 banzuke} - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 6 bashos - (points gain from after November 2018, basically November 2018 minus November 2017) - {comparison to total ZQoSA points for 2017}.

 

ScreechingOwl is the champion of 2018! Very well done! Gurowake comes in a very creditable second place, with Chocshoporyu rounding out the top 5.  Norizo, Yassier and Flohru have all cleared the 400 point mark (Bill just missed out), which is my unofficial bench mark for a great year at this award.

If you look through the whole table - including banzuke position changes - you can see that in general the game has a lot of movement up and (sadly) down, which I consider a good thing, as it means that the game is dynamic and fluid, with ebbs and flows.  Yamashade appears to be the exception, as he was ranked at M8E for both Nov 2017 and Nov 2018 banzukes!

Hi all!

Here is the new Bench banzuke to start 2019.

It was put together (remarkably quickly - thanks guys!) by Kaiomitsuki (who sadly announced his intai from the game, but will continue to be a banzuke maker), Flohru and Jejima - with Asashosakari, Kintamayama and Ekigozan looking on.

We managed to keep the sanyaku down to nine members - although there is an inundation of Sekiwakes!

Most of the banzuke fell into place fairly easily - apart from Makushita, which was tricky, this time around. If you had an MK in Makushita, you may be getting a bit of bad banzuke luck. Sorry about that.

Of course the big news is Jejima's return to Makunouchi after over two years absence!

I am not sure that I fully understand the meaning here. But, I can assure you that 'friendship' is not a factor when it comes to making the Bench banzuke! 

The Bench Sumo banzuke is made by a process of emails between @Jejima @Flohru @Kaiomitsuki @Kintamayama @Asashosakari @Ekigozan - so six of us are involved, in some way or other. The Bench Sumo making committee is by invitation only - as and when an opening arises. The invitation is always offered to the highest ranked player of 'Guess the Banzuke' that plays Bench Sumo, and is not already on the committee.  We thereby have a high standard of banzuke makers.  

It would have to be quite a conspiracy for us to favour our 'friends'. I am sure that all of the members of the banzuke making committee will be happy to confirm that we do not favour (nor disfavour) any player!

In this above instance, wolfgangho should be ideally ranked at ms9. However at the ms9 rank are two players who should ideally be ranked at ms7. They are therefore ranked two places lower than ideal. wolfgangho is ranked one rank lower than ideal. 

Bench Sumo banzuke is made using the 'Dynamic Banzuke making principal' ((c)Ekigozan circa 2004) which means that you are more likely to experience banzuke bad luck with an Mk, than with a KK.

I hope this explains the Bench banzuke a little better.

is a slight understatement.  You're almost guaranteed to not have bad luck in promotions, while you can be demoted almost indefinitely to be able to make sure the previous clause's statement is true for people.

sorry that thsi is such a  good game for banzuke purposes i would have left many times

You may want to look at basically all the players ranked above you to see that they are suffering even worse banzuke luck than you do. Indeed, unfortunately there is lots of bad banzuke in Makushita this time, but the division was quite easy to arrange as there were basically no alternatives regarding the ranking of the players.

Jejima already explained the process in making the bench banzuke and I can only confirm (though I doubt that this is really necessary) that none of us favours his "friends" - indeed after many years of bench banzuke making I am not even looking at the names of the players anymore, only at their ranks/records...

You "lost" 4 places (instead of the 2 you should have lost in an ideal world).

A few Bench things...

1.  The Kyushu 2018 Final MCP results have been reposted.  I'm not sure what happened to the original, but I didn't find it on either Bench group site, so shot #2 is on it's way.

2.  I've updated my stats site to include the recent Kyushu basho's results, and have updated the Ichimon Banzuke with the new Hatsu 2019 data.  Bench salaries have been updated, as well.  You can all of the data here to it here:  www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.com (then click on the Misc. Bench Stats or Bench Salaries menu items). 

3. I'm tossing around a few new stats.  One would be a list of all prizes (searchable, of course).  With that, you would be able to see the detail all of the prizes for a basho, all prizes for a BSer or just search on a single prize.  I've also  cracked the secret code to some score data.  In particular, I'm working on a page that shows your longest perfect score streak and longest perfect score drought (in bouts). The PS stats have some pretty big data results.  (Think 115+ bashos, 604 players & 15 bouts per player - lots of processing time!).  Anyway, those pages are in the works, so stay tuned.

 

BTW - If anyone has any stats that they would like to see, please PM me (or put it right out in the open).
