Bench Sumo news

Just to add. I think saying players should get a rank for every win in their differential AND more wins is higher when they end up the same rank AND all KKs over MKs is a bit too dynamic. If a J2 9-6 didn't warrant dropping a 7-8 M14 one basho it shouldn't warrant it the next just because that J2 has someone at J1 who is 8-7 and must be promoted.

Thank you for your input,   As stated previously, the Bench banzuke is made using slightly different principles than ozumo - in that we purposefully intend for it to be more dynamic. The examples given I agree with if it were Ozumo, but this is Bench Sumo, where we hope to see movement on the banzuke. In Bench Sumo, we reward KKs with at least what they deserve, whenever possible. There is a limit to this, which is why there is sometimes banzuke bad luck for those with a KK - but it is rare. We also reward the really good records. I know that I previously mentioned that we have had only one 15-0 (in all divisions) in the whole history of Bench Sumo. I think we have had only two or three 14-1 scores in that time period, and probably no more than about 20  or so 13-2 records. So basically, a 13-2 record in Bench is similar to 15-0 in Ozumo, 12-3 is probably similar to a 14-1 or 13-2, and even an 11-3 is probably a 12-3 equivalent.

Anyway, with our system of banzuke making that has been going on for a quarter of a century, we have seen a lot of movement in the banzuke, and new (good) players can feasibly hope to reach Makunouchi within a couple of years of playing the game.

There are a few occasions (such as the BIG logjam at the top of Juryo for this past banzuke) where this means that some MK players get more bad banzuke luck than  usual. But these occasions are thankfully very rare.

I appreciate that there may not be complete agreement with our methods, but I hope that at least, that it can be understood that there is some ';method to the madness'. :-)

Yes, I kind of addressed this but let it pass as I didn't think you were going to make it a foundational part of your argument. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of statistics would not expect this to hold up to scrutiny. The scores over time in both Bench and Ozumo can be expressed as a Bell Curve containing basically the same amount of information as the amount of rikishi roughly match. If you compress a Bell Curve from the sides it doesn't suddenly spike in the middle at 7/8-8/7. The intervening scores will also rise. And the Bell Curve for Bench is being squeezed because it has a significantly higher amount of luck involved making extreme high and low scores less common as the factors which contribute to those in Ozumo, injury at one end and extreme skill and physical ability at the other, do not exist.  You don't have many extreme scores in Bench due to some great rise in skill as opposed to Ozumo. It's just  14 to 15 wins is not something that can be achieved on skill often in Bench. Luck, is a cruel mistress. One Ozumo Ozeki and Yokozuna do not deal with much in their prime. One Bench players, even the best, dance with every night.  This does not hold true for scores lower than say 13. In fact you would expect these to rise for bench as there is skill involved and it will show up.

Let's analyze the figures (per Takaoroppa) since the start of 1999:

Record          Bench        Ozumo     Ozumo -Y/O

9-6                 2413           1304         1200

10-5              1522              814           715

11-4                 657              449           378

12 -3                329              219            150

13 -2                 61               136               76

14-1                   13                 76               23

15-0                      1                 28                 2

As you can see if we attribute half the scores in bench to J/M they roughly come into to line with the Ozumo figures minus the Y/O. Y/O level skill is something that might  exist rarely in Bench  players but never expressed due to the fact good players are picking basically the same lineup and must deal with a lot of luck. Players scoring double digits wins on a consistent basis simply do not exist in Bench. it is common in  ozumo at the very top level. Even with that scores of 13 wins and higher are overwhelmingly attributable to not just Yokozuna but Dai-Yokozuna, something which will not and can not exist in bench with a full J/M. No amount of skill is getting you to 14 or 15 wins in Bench, Skill will put you in position but only luck will get you that far. A bunch of injuries take out a few of the best rikishi and someone picking an odd lineup of players who have career best basho maybe.

I haven't, and won't, do a detailed analysis but I'd be willing to bet a small amount that Bench actual has a higher percentage of players with 9 to 12 wins than Ozumo does. Starting at say 5% at 12 and moving up a bit as you get closer to 8.

You can, and should,  hold to your traditions but do so for the real reasons,  you wish to. Not because it has any basis in the numbers. By the numbers there isn't any reason to do it significantly differently than Ozumo. You could argue a 13-2 in Bench is like a 13.5 in ozumo. A 12-3 is a 12-3, or maybe even a little less.

Hi everyone!

Here is the new banzuke for September 2023. It was put together by Sakura, Flohru and Jejima (me), with the usual wise four watching on.

I think that this banzuke has fewer areas of bad banzuke luck, with reasonable dollops of good banzuke luck. See for yourself!

Enjoy!

If you feel strongly attached to this Sumo Forum, consider joining Sumo Forum
If you feel strongly attached to a defunct English language Sumo Forum, maybe SumoTalk could be for you
If you are against automatically pressing the 'henka' button, and/or are related to me, come from the UK, a Commonwealth country (Canada, Australia, New Zealand....), Netherlands, Scandinavia, or if you are called Jakusotsu - then maybe the 'North Pole' ichimon is your natural home.

Hope that helps.

It is strange to be a sumo fan and not have an affinity with Japan.

I don't think Takanorappa checks this very often. An email would probably have to do.

(Many thanks to Sir Takanorappa's stats. I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without them!)

Hi all,

First of all, of course the MCP is an individual competition but as I was curious I wished to go a little further.

After the last MCP results in Nagoya 23 and the first 3 ranks won by Sakura Ichimon, if you remember I was curious to know if it was a first or if it happened before.
I looked for it as it seemed there were no such stats available and here is what I found. If such stats already exist I apologize and I also apologize for all the time I spent preparing all below !

So, I found out that one other Ichimon achieved the same feat. Doitsugo placed 3 of its members in the first 3 ranks in Hatsu 06. Congrats !

And Info-Sumo was very close to a "Grand Slam" (to have all top 5) just missing the second rank in Hatsu 07.

You can find all the TOP 5 in the table here below since the MCP standings started.

Edit. Also please note :

Gernobono / Tokugawa (same player, respective figures added)
Ganzohnesushi / Yamashade (same player, respective figures added)

If there are other cases as above I'm not aware of please let me know to check everythig again. Thanks.

        North Pole 8
        Sakura 7
        Unaffiliated 29

And just for the fun, you'll find here below a ranking I made with the most points won by players in the MCP. I kept the points that are granted for the ICF.
MCP-1 - earns 25 points
MCP-2 - earns 20 points
MCP-3 - earns 15 points
MCP-4 - earns 10 points
MCP-5 - earns 5 points

Edit : When 2 players were tied I splitted points in half. For example, 2 players tied first (25 +20)/2 = 22.5 points for each. And so on.....

I think our Bunbun (Bunbukuchagama) should have twenty points, right? A 5th and a 3rd?

Salute for the data drag, though. I think everyone who's done one of these deep dives somewhere especially respects the effort.

Are you implying my 10.0 ratio won't hold up? :-D

What I can say is that in 10 bashos you'll probably be very high in that table.

In fact, if you were to add 10 zero-point bashos to my record,  I would still be in the top 20. :-P
