I've a lot on my plate but am happy to take a day or two if 'every little bit' helps - preferably early in the basho.

Many thanks! I am putting you down for day 1 Makushita - and that really does help!

Hi everyone!

Here are the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2020 after the March 2020 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from May 2019 to January 2020.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after January 2020) - Rank on the March 2020 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 6 bashos - (points gain from after March 2020, basically March 2020 minus January March).

Yassier moves to the top of the standings! Flohru is just a point behind. Konosato and fujiyama are new entries to the top 10.

Itachi is not only the yusho winner, and the best for ZQoSA this basho, he is also the biggest climber (15 positions) in the rankings.

Over-and-out!

What a basho!

Thanks to everyone who keeps this game running.

I humbly accept the Makuuchi yusho, ZQoSA, and the Makuuchi Technique Prize.

I'd especially like to thank Hakuho without whom this would not have been possible. Congratulations also to him.

I look forward to next basho, with or without spectators in the kokugikan.

I got a 6-9 droning in Makuuchi with a line up I picked almost randomly just to register?  Shows you just how much skill is really a factor...

Hi all,

My wife's older brother (aged 38) died of a heart attack just over a week ago. He has left behind a wife and two young children.  Not surprisingly my mind has been elsewhere for the past week, mainly supporting my wife. (It was impossible for her/us to attend the funeral, due to the current Covid-19 rules in the Philippines.)

I had forgotten that the sumo is about to start, so I appreciated the reminder from Pitinosato.

I will go through the emails later this week to work out the day-to-day gyoji rota.

The entry page is not yet open. We need to wait for @Doitsuyama to do this. I do not know when this will happen.

I am concerned for the players that were kosho back in March - seems like a million years ago - so, if you are on the following list, you may consider sending an early entry to me (please mark it clearly in the subject header), just to be safe.

Kosho in March:

All the best,

Jejima (BS rijicho)

Hi everyone!

Here are the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2020 after the May 2020 basho that did not happen.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from July 2019 to March 2020.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after May 2020) - Rank on the May (July) 2020 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 5 bashos - (points change from after May 2020 - basically losing the points gained in May 2019).

Yassier holds onto the top slot. The top 10 remain the same - just shuffled round a little.

Hi everyone!

Here are the possible 'milestones' for Bench Sumo players for the July basho 2020.

A big shout-out to Takanorappa and his Bench Sumo stat page that made this email possible - and for posting a milestones email last basho, when I was very busy.

All the good stuff can be found here -->  <http://www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm>

There are five parts....

1. The players at a new career high rank.

2. The number of active bashos (multiples of 10) - *if* the player turns up in March.

3. Players who have a chance (even if very remote) of going to a new 'multiple of 100' career wins in March.

4. The current #20 leaderboard for the *all-time* total number of wins.

5. The current #20 leaderboard for the highest win percentage for *active* players.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

Here are the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2020 after the July 2020 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from September 2019 to July 2020.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after May 2020) - Rank on the July 2020 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 5 bashos - (points change from after July 2020 - basically the points gained for July 2020 minus the points gained in July 2019).

Yassier did not turn up for this basho, so drops from the top spot, down to joint 8th. Flohru is the new leader. Metzinowaka is the only player to break into the top 10.

Over-and-out-until-September!

Hi everyone,

Here is the new Bench banzuke for September 2020.

It was put together by Jejima, Kaiomitsuki and Flohru, under the watchful eyes of Kintamayama, Ekigozan and Asashosakari.

It was a fairly easy one to craft.

There are tiny amounts of bad luck here and there, but good luck (especially for most of the Juryo promotions to Makunouchi!) seems to be in the majority - but nothing too outlandish.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

Here are the possible 'milestones' for Bench Sumo players for the September basho 2020.

A big shout-out to Takanorappa and his Bench Sumo stat page that made this email possible.

All the good stuff can be found here -->  <http://www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm>

There are five parts....

1. The players at a new career high rank.

2. The number of active bashos (multiples of 10) - *if* the player turns up in September.

3. Players who have a chance (even if very remote) of going to a new 'multiple of 100' career wins in September.

4. The current #20 leaderboard for the *all-time* total number of wins.

5. The current #20 leaderboard for the highest win percentage for *active* players.

Enjoy!

6th for highest winning percentage of active players?! To intai, or not to intai, that is the question...

In case I don't see it come up elsewhere, I'm happy to help out with a few gyoji days in the upcoming basho.

Hi everyone!

There is only  less than 19 hours until the entry deadline!  Looking at the banzuke below, there are LOTS of people leaving it to the last minute. Quick! Enter now! You can always change your squad AFTER the deadline to take into account missing rikishi. BUT you must get that initial entry in. (This is to allow the banzuke makers plenty of time to make the early days torikumis. We have busy lives!)

The following players were KOSHO in July, so must enter a squad this basho, or else they will be awarded a 0-0-15 record, and get demoted accordingly:-

M15E Hokuyutaka (@Asashosakari)
J1W @Heiyu
J2W Gansekiiwa (@Rocks)
J8W @Saruyama
ms5W @Anjoboshi
ms7E @Haidouzo
ms8E Mariohana
ms11W VESHANA
ms12E @kamogawa
ms14E aoyume
ms19W Hibarifuji

So what happens to our Bench Sumo picks if both Yokozunae go kyujo? Does everyone fight with only 9 men, or do we get an extra pick somewhere else on the banzuke?

I find it amazing that it hasn't happened before! During the history of Bench Sumo there have been quite long stretches with only one yokozuna, and plenty of basho with zero yokozuna later in the basho. But there has always been at least one on shonichi. (Ayokozuna...)

The rules are here.

  • Your squad for the Bench Basho. This will comprise of the following Makunouchi Division rikishi:- One Yokozuna, one Ozeki, one Sekiwake, one Komusubi and 6 Maegashira rikishi. In the case that one or more of the sanyaku ranks (i.e. Yokozuna, Ozeki, Sekiwake or Komusubi) have no active rikishi taking part in a particular basho, you will be allowed to select an extra maegashira ranked rikishi to fill out your squad. Be sure to check after the Day 1 torikumi is announced on the Saturday before the basho to see if any of your rikishi have withdrawn due to injury so that you can replace them in time.

I just hope that the automation can handle such an instance. @Doitsuyama?

Edit: I wrote the above over 20 years ago. As Kashunowaka says, we have never had to use the 7 Maegashira option, but I am secretly chuffed that my younger self had imagined such a possibility.
