Bench Sumo news

Recommended Posts

Dear all,
I have been rather busy of late, but the following message was delivered to me a few days ago by the venerable Marushiki, chair of the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council.
****************
Venerable Richijo
Firstly, the YDC sadly accept the intai of Randomituski from Yokozuna ranking.
It was a short rein but memorable, we wish him well in future endeavours.   One of the YDC members suggested  instating "ichidai haridashi yokozunastatus.
It is hoped that Randomitsuki will keep playing as Randomitsuki II in future Basho, his presence will be missed should he completely leave.
In regard to Kitakachiyama, We are all very impressed with his performance over the last year.   It is with honour that we offer Kitakachiyama the promotions to Yokozuna.
The acceptance of this promotion is entirely up to his.  Given the experiences of previous Yokozuna, and knowing the challenges faced in the BS game, (Not to mention the possible Wakanohana II curse) .   Should he choose to decline promotion we fully understand.

 Marushiki (Chair YDC)
****************
Of course Kitakachiyama will accept the promotion! (and will be ranked at Yokozuna on the next banzuke.)  Omedetou!  Back-to-back yushos is impressive!
We look forward to reading Kitakachiyama's yusho acceptance speech, and his Yokozuna acceptance speech.

It is a new era of Bench Sumo - the Kitakachiyama era!

Hi all!

There is another promotion to announce.

Susanoo has done enough (30 wins over the past three bashos, with the last basho being ranked at Sekiwake) to be awarded re-promotion to Ozeki.

Omedetou!

It is hoped that this time, he will do better than during his last stint (in 2012), when he lasted for just bashos, with a combined score of 11-19.

We hope to hear his words on his promotion back to Ozeki!

Hi all!

Here is the new banzuke for November 2016.  This one was quite tricky to put together - but in the end, Jejima, Flohru and Kaiomitsuki managed to do it, (with Kintamayama, Ekigozan and Asashosakari looking on.)

Kitakachiyama becomes our newest Yokozuna. Susanoo returns to Ozeki. Randomitsuki (after his intai) rejoins the banzuke at ms10W, by the rijicho's invitation.

Overall, there seems to be decent amounts of good luck, with little bad luck.

We look forward to reading Kitakachiyama's yusho acceptance speech, and his Yokozuna acceptance speech.

It is a new era of Bench Sumo - the Kitakachiyama era!

Dear BSYDC and all fellow BS Players... This won't be easy, as English is not my native language and I don't speak Japanese at all. But I have to try, this is the moment of glory, so I can't remain speechless.

So let's start from the yusho. It was a strange basho with amazing luck. I started from 1-2, and last three days were also 1-2. And I had one 0-point loss. For at least one day I was the leader of "Good luck of the basho" in the MCP. Not a Yokozuna candidate performance at all. But in the middle I was 9-0, and that's what you can call a Yokozuna run!

The most memorable moment was the final bout, musubi-no-ichiban. It really was THE musubi-no-ichiban! The bout which was to decide the yusho, finished with perfect scores and very strong and identical benches. As if it was a mono-ii! Yokozuna Randomitsuki won only by the lowest ranked winning rikishi, a pre-basho pick. I lost, but thanks to a very strong performance, I won anyway. Second consecutive yusho came true and my tsunatori run was finished in glory. Like in the real Ozumo, promotion after two consecutive yusho!

It seems unbelievable, but I already did the same last year, when I was promoted to Ozeki. Back then it seemed impossible to do it again. Things never happen the same way twice, right? Yeah, right! I'm not the first one to win two consecutive BS Yusho (I think Itachiyama in 2010 and Charliki in 2006 did it), but has anybody done it twice? Or more? By the way, I'm glad I haven't done it in Kisenosato's way, who was on the constant tsunatori run without a single Makuuchi Yusho...

So, I humbly accept the honor of being the fifth Bench Sumo Yokozuna (as the Kyushu BS banzuke is already out). And I promise to gambarize! What can be my next goal? I already have 5 Makuuchi Yusho, just like Yokozuna Wakanohana, who didn't won any more since his Yokozuna promotion... But "do not be like Wakanohana" does not seem proper. I would prefer much more to be like Yokozuna Musashimaru, my favorite rikishi back in times when I fell in love with sumo. I just have to win 5 more yusho to become The Great Yokozuna! Sounds impossible? No? Yeah right, I know it does. But... Musashimaru was the Yokozuna for five more years, so let it be my goal!

It wont be easy. I think it's much more difficult to win a yusho as Yokozuna (who won the most yusho while being a BS Yokozuna?). It's because of the pressure, like former Yokozuna Randomitsuki said lately. He never had 3 makekoshi in a row until now, and I already had not only 3, but 7 (back in 2008)! But on the other hand, my worst score in Makuuchi so far is 6-9. Not bad at all. Will the pressure play the main role in my case? We shall see. It's only a game, but...  It can take quite a lot of fun out of it, but I wasn't feeling that while being on the tsunatori run. It was rather a new excitement. And let it stay that way!

By the way, if it is to be called the Kitakachiyama era, then I would like to tell you that my shikona is connected with Maegashira 3 Kitakachidoki. I loved the way how the English commentator on Eurosport was trying to pronounce that!

I hope that the Kitakachiyama era won't last short!

The Fifth Bench Sumo Yokozuna Kitakachiyama.

Hi everyone!

In what might be a record time for recent years, here is the new banzuke for January 2017.  It was put together by Flohru, Kaiomitsuki and Jejima, with Kintamayama, Ekigozan and Asashosakari watching on.

It was fairly straight forward to put together - although there are pockets of bad luck, especially for MK players.

It is worth noting that former Yokozuna Randomitsuki is already ranked in lower Juryo.  I am guessing he could well be in the Makunouchi joi-jin by the end of 2017!

All the best,

Jejima

Even though I didn't play, I followed this game closely. It was interesting to check the results at the end of each day. I was intrigued as to how you'd deal with the crowded top of the banzuke. I look forward to following along (and hopfully playing) next time.

Sanyaku! If somebody would predict that after day 7, score 2-5 and horrible points until the point... :-)

Here is the new Bench banzuke for March 2017.  It was put together by Flohru, Kaiomitsuki and Jejima, under the watchful eye of Kintamayama, Ekigozan and Asashosakari.

There is some bad luck (especially for a few demoted), but not too much!

Enjoy!

Hi everyone,

We all thought that this would be a tricky banzuke to put together, but in the end it turned out to be quite simple.   The banzuke making commitee are Flohru, Kaiomitsuki and me (Jejima), with Ekigozan, Kintamayama and Asashosakari looking on.

There are some players with real bad luck (apologies to those) - but also there are some players with lots of good luck (check out some of the promotions in Makunouchi!)

Anyways, here it is!

Jejima

Kitakachiyama (Y1E 7-8)  Y1
Itachiyama (O1W 10-5)    O1   Susanoo (O1E 7-8)
ScreechingOwl (S2W 9-6)  S1   Itachi (S1W 8-7)

Damimonay (M7W 12-3)     K1   Rubensan (M5W 11-4)
                        K2   Kintamayama (M4W 10-5)

Ruziklao (M3W 9-6)       M1   kuroimori (K1E 7-8)
Taka (K1W 7-8)           2    Metzinowaka (M7E 10-5)

The acceptance of this promotion is entirely up to his.  Given the experiences of previous Yokozuna, and knowing the challenges faced in the BS game, (Not to mention the possible Wakanohana II curse) .   Should he choose to decline promotion we fully understand.

I know what you mean ! B-)

I sure picked the right basho to have my first KK in Makuuchi.

M15 to M6 off a 9-6.

Wow!

Hi, all!  I've got too much time on my hands, so I updated the BS stats on my website: http://takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm
I've cross-posted this from the BS list, as I know some tend to shy away from that list during non-basho times.  Enjoy the numbers.

You can go directly to the stats page here: http://takanorappa.com/BenchStats/BSStatsMenu.htm
All the stats have been updated, plus I added a few more (they were so simple, I don't know why I didn't have them years ago).
 - Tech Prize History:  Shows the winners and pts for all Tech Prize winners
 - NCP Prize History: Shows the winners and pts for all NCP Prize winners
 - YB Prize History: Shows the winners and pts for all Yaocho Bum Prize winners
 - Fighting Sprit Prize winners: Shows the winners and PS count for all (you can guess it, right?) FS Prize winners

I've also updated the salaries and basho paychecks for this basho (& added a special feature on that page, let's see if anyone finds it.) :-) You can access directly here: http://takanorappa.com/BenchStats/PayExplain.htm

Try searching for yourself on the "Last Basho's Paychecks" page :-)

Doitsuyama is the richest Bench Sumo player with a life time earnings of 1,003,535,880 yen!  - That is over 9,000,000 US dollars.

Why is the current Yokozuna not listed anywhere on the stats or the earnings?

Everybody can play the more the merrier as we say in England....

Huh, it can't be easy for merry old England with Brexit, banks fleeing, Scottish making separatist noises and England drawing into itself...
How is the arm? Hope you have healed up a little.

Thanks for asking....

My arm is great the last time I had any pain was on chrstmas eve last year.....

I still need to be carefull though because I know from experience that  a second fall would be many times worse.............

That will soon change unless he starts playing again.

It's tough to be on top.  :-)   It looks like my range grabber started at row 2, instead of row 1.  I'll get that corrected soon (along with some more search/active player control (I hope - still have a couple javascript bugs to work out).
