Junior individual finals:

The participants...except for the two Watanabe brothers (?) from Nagano I haven't even tried to figure out any given names. The surnames are also unconfirmed except for about a dozen of the more exotic ones where I've made the effort to try to find sources; for the other names I've assumed the most common readings, so there might be a Hasegawa who's actually Hasekawa and the like. (Corrections are welcome, of course.)

If a sumo wrestler wins this tournament does he qualify for a tsukedashi rank in Ozumo?  What about the junior champion?  What is the age limit between junior and adult?

Winner for makushita, quarterfinalists for sandanme, adult section only - and subject to Ozumo's age restriction (under 25), of course.

Junior competitors generally need to be of high school-equivalent age, i.e. born 1998/Apr/02 to 2001/Apr/01 for this year's competition. (Exceptionally, also up to one year younger.)

So born on April 1, 1998 is Adult?  Born the next day is Junior?  If so, why is April 1st the cut-off?

I believe that's because the academic year in Japan begins in April.

Niigata    2-1  Ehime
Mie        3-0  Nagasaki

Third Place
Ehime      2-1  Nagasaki

Final
Niigata    2-1  Mie

Big upset in the first round when powerhouse Ishikawa was felled by lowly Fukushima. Fellow well-known top seeds Wakayama and Tottori didn't fare much better by failing to make the semis. In the end the Niigata team prevailed in this rather wacky competition, winning the prefecture's first-ever championship. (And doing it despite having a pretty clear weak link...their three rikishi went 6-1, 3-4, 7-0 in the course of the event.)

Great showing also for Ehime prefecture who I don't recall having much success in the past (although admittedly it's been three or four years since I last looked at Kokutai results in detail), with their third-place finish here and the runner-up performance by the juniors. In fact, they're the only prefecture who even made the quarterfinals in both competitions, the other 14 spots in the two top 8's all went to different prefectures.

Final
Shiroyama (Mie)        shitatehineri     Saigo (Tottori)

Saigo was a university senior 3 years ago, so he's either 24 or 25 right now...doubtful though that he'll make use of the Ms15Td option even if his age were to allow it, I would guess. The only current senior in the top 8 for possible Sd100Td considerations was third-place Murata. Good tournament for Toyo University as is becoming the norm of late, with both the runner-up and the bronze medalist in their ranks.

Also nice to see hometown representative Satodate from Hachimantai (where this competition has been held) go all the way to the quarters.

On another note - does shinitai not exist in amateur sumo? Otherwise that was a spectacular misjudgement in the mono-ii, IMHO.

Seems to be Ehime's year tbh, with strong showings in all sorts of competitions, managing to bag the high school yokozuna and wanpaku yokozuna titles along the way. Good for them!
