Inter-high sumo 2016

Recommended Posts

The sumo part of the koukou-soutai (inter-high) started today in Tottori.
Aiming for high school yokozuna is the nephew of Asashoryu, Byambasuren (17, 184cm, 96kg), ryugakusei, 2nd year at the Nittai-dai Kashiwa high, who after one year in Japan and less than a year in the sumo club already won the yusho at the Kanto championships (below). One year ago he had only 67kg. He first was in the wrestling club but his uncle urged him to go into sumo.

Dream (of course): "As a pro surpassing Asashoryu."

High school yokozuna for the first time is Yamaguchi from Ehime Tsushima high, winning in the final against 1st year Nakamura from Niigata Kaiyou high. http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXLSSXK40974_U6A800C1000000/

So less than a week after claiming the wanpaku title, Ehime have managed to bag the high school title as well. Looks like it's their time in the spotlight :)

Yamaguchi Reo (山口 怜央) is certainly a big name in amateur sumo, having been a semi-finalist (and quarter-finalist the following year) at wanpaku, and a few years later, runner-up in the middle school championships (to Kumamoto's Kawakami Ryuko 川上 竜虎).

The runner-up, Nakamura Taiki (中村 泰輝), reached the last 32 at wanpaku, and won the middle school competition at this year's Hakuho Cup. This means that Nakamura came second at Inter-High, as a first year. That's very impressive indeed, and suggests that he's a name to watch out for over the next few years.

Former Hakuho Cup winner, Kumamoto's Kawasoe Keita (川副 圭太), who knocked out Byamba, and Chiba's Ito Chikashi (伊藤 周), who won a recent Kanto tournament, both finished in the quarter-finals.

For someone who claims to be yokozuna-level it seems like just about everybody has beaten Byamba..

Maybe amateur sumo in Japan wasn't as easy as he thought it would be?

Very fitting team final in Tottori: Tottori Johoku on the home soil won the title against Saitama Sakae, 4-1.

Only the big Touma (Tsuguto the future monster) lost - in the 1st bout, like in the semi against Nakamura. I thought at first I made a mistake because the name is written with the wrong kanji, but he is member of the team as 1st year: http://jyouhoku-sumo.jimdo.com/%E9%83%A8%E5%93%A1%E7%B4%B9%E4%BB%8B/ - no other Touma there - he wasn't in the individuals, only there the full (and correct) name is given in the results.

A new Mongolian is team member as well, 2nd year Amarsanaa - he made it to the qf in the individuals - and was the 2nd to lose in the team sf - no matter at 3-1.

Toma's finding it increasingly difficult as he moves up in the amateur sumo world, maybe he'll go along the lines of Yamamoto?

Saitama Sakae have always been there or there abouts, though interestingly, Tottori's team features 2 talents (and former club mates) from Aomori, namely Ishioka Mikiya (石岡 弥輝也) and Echigoya Tomoki (越後谷 知樹)
