Chiyonofuji passing

Recommended Posts

One of my greatest sumo memories was from about 20 years ago, when Josh Reyer and I walked in off the street after morning keiko had finished, and were invited by (we guess) some Kokonoe-beya supporters to go in and have some chankonabe.... we were soon joined by the oyakata, and we had an incredible time. He answered all our questions - and praised Josh's use of chopsticks.

Vale Chiyonofuji Mitsugu. One of the hardest and most gifted men to ever mount a dohyo.

Very sad. My wife Keiko thought he was very handsome when she was a teenager.

2016 certainly sucks in many respects.

Taiho, Chiyonofuji and Kitanoumi all have left us in a little more than 3,5 years. Not to mention former Ozeki Kaiketsu who passed away in 2014. Difficult times for sumo fans and Legends.

Sumo Art

I was showing the page to a friend of mine who can't understand my interest in sumo at all ('Fat guys shoving each other.'). Nothing impressed her. She caught sight of a picture of Chiyonofuji. "Who's that?" she breathed.

His retirement announcement in the New York Times from 1991. Still a great read today.

The Wolf is gone.

The first sumo match I ever saw on tv (tape delay) was Chiyonofuji vs Takahanada, 25 years ago.Ive always wondered why he never bevame chairman of the NSK, in any case he is very often viewed as the strongest rikishi of modern times,I will miss him.

Aloha, Chiyonofuji

Very sad news indeed, the last news about him and his health - especially him missing duties the last months made me already worry a lot.

Kuroimori, currently in Abu Dhabi bound for Tokyo - about ti arrive in a Chiyonofuji-less Japan... :-(

Sometimes some friend of mine try to make fun from the fatty guys of that wacky sumo. Then I show them the Wolf.
