MrGrumpyGills 114 Posted July 13, 2016 Nasty kachiage by the Boss.... I thought it was an excellent kachiage! I'm beginning to wonder if Tochiozan has said or done something behind the scenes that has irritated Hakuko. He beat him last year.
Katooshu 3,079 Posted July 13, 2016 Ura is some escape artist....it feels like every other match he looks on the brink of being pushed out, but his ability to stay on his feet and in bounds during tough situations is something else.
Atenzan 1,074 Posted July 13, 2016 Give Ura a year or three to four and he'll become a very exciting makuuchi-jo'i regular.
Atenzan 1,074 Posted July 13, 2016 Who are your bets for the hiramaku dai-ichigo? I say Ichinojou gets there on day 9, looking as good as ever.

Treblemaker 254 Posted July 13, 2016 Let's play "what if"... Let's say both Geeku and Goeido crap out of the Ozeki roles, and Kise gets promoted. Essentially, there would be 4 Yoks and only 1 Ozeki (Terunofuji). (I don't see anyone realistically being imminently bumped up to Ozeki any time soon.) I remember the days when there were a glut of Yoks, but they were on their way out, and there were enough Ozekis to hold a nice campfire. With the banzuke now completely looking like something from Bizzaro World (4 Yoks, 1 Oz), is there something in the NSK handbook that would serve to correct the balance? I'm sure this has happened before, but I don't remember if there were any special steps taken at the time. Anyone?

I guess that the banzuke will revert to normal in time, there's nothing NSK can do to "fix" it except push for Yok retirements. By the way, and I'm looking at Asashosakari, does anyone know why in the case of the linked banzuke they nominated Kashiwado to be the yokozuna-ozeki and not Sadanoyama? It makes sense to me that the haridashi-yokozuna would befit the name more than the sei-yokozuna. Edited July 13, 2016 by McBugger

It makes sense to me that the haridashi-yokozuna would befit the name more than the sei-yokozuna. Back then a second Yokozuna on one side was attached at the side of the banzuke as haridashi Yokozuna. That means that in the order of reading on the West side Kashiwado was ahead of Sekiwake Tamanoshima and Komusubi Hasegawa while Sadanoyama was attached "outside the frame". So to have the correct order Kashiwado had to be the Ozeki.
Kintamayama 44,208 Posted July 13, 2016 (edited) Who are your bets for the hiramaku dai-ichigo? I say Ichinojou gets there on day 9, looking as good as ever. Ichinojou is the regular Ichinojou. He is not looking as good as ever.. He has never had a makekoshi ranked under M4. He has not had a kachikoshi ranked higher than M4 the last four times he was there. He didn't win more than 5 bouts in any of those bashos. Ichinojou is being the usual Ichinojou. His initial good records are unrepeated history. Until he can prove otherwise, he is still the same Ichinojou of late. Edited July 13, 2016 by Kintamayama

bettega 422 Posted July 14, 2016 Kaisei? As the East Sekiwake, he has it pretty easy the first few days. Steak time- no more than 6 wins. He's beaten Tochinoshin (pretty even score between them) and Kotoyuuki (dominates him) so far. Let's not be L7. 6 wins is 3 more than what I'm expecting :-D
egparis18 622 Posted July 14, 2016 3 matta in the Ichinojo Yoshikaze bout? I couldn't see why. Did I miss something or am I right in thinking the gyoji was nitpicking? Very sorry for Yoshikaze.

Very sorry for Yoshikaze. Ichinojo mattaed his way to victory, apparently hitting against Yoshikaze's eye socket in the matta overture. I can only repeat: in Ozumo timing does matta! Jyuunomori 226 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) Hakuho was so distracted because of Kisenosato's slipup that he himself got owned. Only if the kimarite had been Kubinage instead. Excitement ensues! Ichinojo is in the lead. xD But yeah beating two Ozeki, a Sekiwake and Grand Yokozuna Hakuho. 8 wins and Outstanding Performance price is in Takarafuji's pocket. I have no doubts of this. kuroimori 1,634 Posted July 14, 2016 Oh come on... Hakuho opens with a harite, Takarafuji counters by nekodamashi(!!!) and then Hakuho took a free handed dive. Seriously?
rhyen 1,799 Posted July 14, 2016 No, it was an Osunaarashi's swing that Takarafuji used to enrage Hakuho into a bulldozing charge. Olé!
