Basho Talk - Nagoya Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

Ura looking good, like usual. The doubters have been quieter of late, no?

Let's wait until he's facing some opponents this basho who aren't among the most balance-challenged sekitori, shall we?

Fair enough. I'll admit that I've let myself buy into the hype somewhat, but that's tempered by recognizing that the real test (hitting a wall) is still ahead of him. Even so, he is...interesting. A likable young man with an unorthodox but (thus far) effective style. He may very well shake things up in makuuchi someday.

Ura's rank, overall potential and where he will hit the wall aren't really the issues. The simple fact is this relatively small youngster is very entertaining to watch. Judging by the likes on the Ura vids posted hereabouts, quite a few members feel the same.

No word about Mitakeumi so far? I liked what i saw. Let's not forget it is only his 9th basho and he is slightly injured.

I do think Ura will hit a wall, I think that will be between mid and lower maegashira, though. So I think hes gonna do well this basho.

Kaisei fought hard, but a Kisenosato hidari-yotsu is always perilous, unless your shikona starts with an H and ends in "akuhou". Still, I think that he's gonna have to settle with winning Best Eyebrows again.

Terunofuji ruined my TUG pick on the tawara edge, but I'm glad he's back to his winning ways.

Kotoshougiku, what is happening?

Kisenosato displayed his strength in both matches. He clearly showed Mitakeumi has ways to go before playing with the big boys. I hope Kise gets an yusho and be promoted to Yokozuna soon.

Terunofuji looks like he is healthy. He will remain an Ozeki.

Kotoshogiuku & Kotoyuki are combined 0-4. Kotoyuki is going against Tenofuji. That's going to be an interesting match.

Did Satoyama get injured? He was holding his shoulder after the 2nd match.

What a &%#$ing comedy of errors. Arawashi vs Nishikigi.

First off, Nishikigi does two mattas in a row, the second one being painful to watch. Then Arawashi does a matta of his own but the gyoji hakkeyois them into a half-hearted tachiai. Nishikigi loses ground and gets pushed into the south side of the dohyo, but arawashi fails to get his back. Then the most half-hearted, half-nage-no-uchi-ai that looks like a yorikiri takes place and it is obvious Arawashi has won, but some shimpan calls a monoii.

Anyway, Arawashi by shitatenage. Pity this wasn't a real bout.

Meanwhile, Kitaharima is impressive. Gambarizing like never before.

What a good match, Shoudai vs Ichinojou! And thank you based Kounosuke for ensuring that we get a good tachiai.

Great power battle between the big men Shodai and Ichinojo!

Could become a great rivalry if Ichinojo can get his act together.

Tochi, no win.

Kotoshougiku must go kyujo. This is becoming painful.

Something's wrong with Kotoshogiku...

I'll bet good money that it's his knee.

I thought so, too. Both are taped up :/

Just spotted ex-Kyokutenho on guard duty :)

I wasn't paying close attention, but did I just see the yobidashi wipe his nose with Mitakeumi's towel?

Hakuhou, Terunofuji and Kisenosato are the only unbeaten "true jo'i" after day 3, even as the bracket extends to M3w following Oosunaarashi's kyujo. The matches between them will likely be on:

Day 10- Kisenosato vs Terunofuji

Day 11- Hakuhou vs Terunofuji

Day 13- Hakuhou vs Kisenosato.

Harumafuji's knee seems to be in really bad shape. He couldn't put any pressure on it when he wanted to stop his trajectory at the edge of the tawara.

Strange moment there at 1:46, looks like Sato wasn't paying enough attention when he was walking off.
