Asashosakari 18,786 Posted July 23, 2016 Actually the trigger was Wakanami's Yusho in 1968. (anip)Thanks for the correction. That was the other one I vaguely remembered, but some of the cases in between confused me a bit (primarily Sadanoyama's 1961 yusho).
Benevolance 2,478 Posted July 23, 2016 I find it absolutely delicious that Goeidou's kachikoshi hopes are pinned against Kisenosato's yusho hopes. It would be even better if Goeidou were already kadoban, but hey. I can't get everything I want.

robnplunder 974 Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) I see Sato lost by a foul. Was it a hair pull? It was a blatant one at that. As soon as I saw it, I knew the win would be reversed. Sato did it right in front of a judge and he clearly saw it. He called monoii immediately. It's the first one I've seen it called and there have been many close ones in my opinion. I think Terunofuji will pull it off tomorrow. Kise vs Go is a must win situation for both. The match would be spirited one. I hope Go wins it as I don't see Kise getting an Yusho even with the win. Harumafuji will beat Hakuho for another yusho. He looked strong all basho whereas Hakuho looked shaky at times. Edited July 23, 2016 by robnplunder

robnplunder 974 Posted July 23, 2016 Two basho later, there could be only one Ozeki left. Shodai & Mitakeumi seem to take turns in following each other's footstep. What the hell happened to Kotoyuki? He seems to lose his balance too easily. I didn't hear he got married recently, unlike Kotoshogiku ;-) .
Atenzan 1,074 Posted July 23, 2016 I would love to see Terunofuji get genki again, and see him be the "next yokozuna" everyone is hyping up. There's something in his yotau that just gets me.

There are already 3 'zuna" and 3 Ozeki. It's crowded at the top. One less Ozeki would suit me just fine. One less 'zuna is ok by me, too. Let's see which one blinks first. Sure, the old guard are bound to retire en masse in a few years anyway, they're all past their age peak anyway. I just want the feeling that "it's obvious that beast Terunofuji is going to be the 72nd yokozuna". If and when he overcomes his injuries once and for all, I think he's gonna be my favourite big-bodied active rikishi.

It's crowded at the top even more! :-) Amakaze's foot was very close to being out first before he beat Ura. Did he really beat Ura or shinpan missed it? Ura would be in contention for the yusho if he'd beaten Amakaze then. Still, it's a good comeback in this basho for Ura after he injured his ankle. Dapeng 232 Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) What the hell. I have no idea how Hakuhō lost that bout Kisenosato had no tachiai both times, Im surprised the second one wasnt called a matta too. I thought he was done for and then wat. Despite the win, its clear Kisenosato has a really big mental issue. I think Hakuhō will beat Harumafuji tomorrow unless Haru pulls a trick (maybe the non-henka) and Kise will beat Gōeidō. If Hakuhō loses tomorrow, I think hes gonna tie his worst-ever record as yokozuna (105) which last time was due to an injury. Im really curious to see what Hakuhō has to say about his performance this basho, I wonder if he really is injured. Kōnosuke is my favorite gyōji btw. Here is the official explanation for Hakuho's under performance: Hakuho tripped his left toe days ago thus his toe is injured. He couldn't beat Kisenosato yesterday and can't beat Harumafuji today, all because of that injured toe. Kisenosato has to beat Goeindou to keep his tsuna-run alive. Katooshu 3,135 Posted July 23, 2016 (edited) I really hope Yoshikaze beats Takanoiwa....I don't like the idea of someone being that much in the yusho race having beaten only one person above M5. Edited July 23, 2016 by Katooshu
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted July 24, 2016 Hakuho does have grievances against Shikimori Inosuke after being called for the matta yesterday, as he felt that they had both started at the same time. If I'm reading the article right, the tate gyoji is from Miyagino beya. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1683467.html
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted July 24, 2016 The YDC has stated that they will not recommend Kisenosato for Yokozuna this basho, but apparently there are voices within the NSK who want Kise to get promoted on a 12-3 even WITHOUT the yusho. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1683465.html

Katooshu 3,135 Posted July 24, 2016 (edited) Not since Kise beat him in Aki, and it hasn't even been close. Kise's been the superior rikishi for all but a few tournaments (he beats Kak plenty by the way). Terunofuji may well have had greater potential, but who knows if he'll ever realize it with these injuries. Edited July 24, 2016 by Katooshu

We can only hope Harumafuji losing twice or three times today to avoid such a laugh. Are you confused as to who is who, and what exactly is going on here? There are people in the Kyokai who want to promote Kisenosato, presumably because he's shown himself to clearly be at the same level as at least Kakuryu and close to Harumafuji, far above the other 3 Ozeki, he was previously stopped from winning two in a row solely by the greatest ever posting a better score and is close to winning again, and they sorta would like a Japanese Yokozuna. But the YDC is never going to recommend someone without a yusho. At least, I highly, highly doubt it. It's like, the entire point of their existence, right? Regardless, the NSK can still think that things would be better for them if he were promoted.

Meanwhile, the shimpan committee has officially stated that it's yusho or bust: http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1683722.html
