Kesho mawashi no longer new

Recommended Posts

Tatsutagawa-oyakata (Homasho) donated a kesho-mawashi to his hometown Shimonoseki, to be on display in the lobby of the city hall till the end of the month, later it will be in the Shimonseki Budokan.

In the design of a local folk toy, the fugu flute - Shimonoseki is famous for fugu fishery.

Designed by local fairy tale artist Takeshi Matsumoto

In the design for the Hokuto-no-ken kesho-mawashi set for Kisenosato for the first time manga characters from anime are used for a yokozuna set - so far only for individual kesho mawashi, recently Kinnikuman for Chiyotairyu, and also Tetsuwan-atom and Bakabon were used

Also for a yokozuna set there are some with characters designed by manga artists though, but not for manga and anime

Hakuho will get a kesho-mawashi set with a character designed by the late manga artist Takashi Yanase, the creator of Anpanman. Tachi-mochi and tsuyu-harai have the kanji 愛 ai (love) and 勇気 yuuki (courage), like in the words of the popular Anpanman march, opening theme from the anime, lyrics by Yanase. One of his supporting companies presents it to him, Asahi-ryokuken, who sells an aojiru health drink for which Hakuho does CMs

More famous is this one from Yanase

Toyonoshima put the photo of a (not new, but …) keshō-mawashi on his blog, designed by Takashi Yanase the creator of Anpan-man (picture book/manga/anime for small kids – I liked it from the start on TV in Oct. 1988, just my level at the time), who died on the 13th at the age of 94. He like Toyonoshima was from Kochi pref. http://ameblo.jp/toyonoshima-daiki/entry-11639402065.html

My post about the kinnikuman kesho mawashi apparently is one of the many that have been slaughtered by the forum update

bt-chiyodairyu-meP201704250-ogp_0.jpg

Local mascot characters from the rikishi's place of origin are also quite common recently

I expected them to add a sumo one for Daiki

- they didn't, just used the pointing version above, pointing to his shikona

Sadanoumi has Kumamon, Tokushoryu got one with Nara's Sento-kun

I'll post more about the manga ones later

The list of the main manga kesho mawashi: http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1812965.html

Kinnikuman for Chiyotairyu is shown above

Tetsuwan-atom was used by Tashiroiwa for his one basho only in juryo - later he became manga artist. No pic to be found, BBM's Sumo 1964.4 edition should show it: http://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/7910869

Genbu wore his one with Bakabon's papa for a few basho more in juryo - he has it on display at his restaurant in Sapporo http://chuofire.la.coocan.jp/sumokonnnakoto-sapporo-susukino-genbu.htm

and has more pics in the Genbu-beya

I wonder who put up that Pepsi masashi of Takatoriki? I wouldn't be surprised if Takatoriki needs the money..

Anyway, this has got me really interested in kesho-mawashi of antiquity. Would love to see more pics of older kesho-mawashi - though they are likely less imaginative.

Too bad that the further back you go (and not that far back) all pics would be black and white.

I'm thinking I saw a kesho-mawashi exhibit in the sumo museum not terribly long ago? Man, my memory these days..

I haven't yet found Akebono's set with the US and Japan flags for the attendants, nor the one of Hitachiyama with laurels, decorated with pearls, rubies and a 5karat diamond. The most expensive single one with a 10karat diamond of Wakashimazu is said to have cost 150 million yen, other sources name "just" 20 million.

Yokozuna sets on display at the Osaka museum of history - at some point in the past on display at the sumo museum

A set of Asahifuji from his local Aomori koenkai - the yokozuna from apple area Aomori, but scallops for him, and not Mt. Fuji but Aomori's Mt. Iwaki

DGDstZRV0AAQAxj.jpg:large

A set of Chiyonofuji from his Nagoya koenkai - this time Mt. Fuji

wst1707250038-p3.jpg

reminds me of this

k-sp-0820-0006-ns-big.jpg

A set of Onokuni, from the Onokuni koenkai, designed by Japanese-style painter Tamako Kataoka

DGNE2dDUAAA6f5k.jpg:large

This set of Musashimaru, from the Osaka Musashigawa koenkai, was also designed by a Japanese-style painter, Hiroshi Senju

DGSOqtMVwAE4PUN.jpg:large

A set of Mienoumi (14th Musashigawa-oyakata)- with calligraphy by a Mr. Ichikawa Kuniichi 市川國一, which is the real name of former rijicho (as maegashira!) Dewanohana - the 13th Musashigawa-oyakata and 8th Dewanoumi ->Mienoumi's first shisho: 功 一 箕 : 一簣之功 ikki no kou: the importance of piling up effort after effort to reach the final goal

DF3LeOpU0AQKVlv.jpg:large

the "set" that Wakanohana I used for his first dohyo-iri at the Meiji shrine are just 3 of the same with some organization's emblem - no sponsor name

DGD6l_0UQAAk41d.jpg:large

next in the sumo museum in the Hokkaido rikishi exhibition (now they have Ibaraki rikishi): a set of Chiyonoyama that looks like souvenir postcards: from chocolate maker Morinaga (the one of the kensho award): Hokusai's big wave with the gods of wind and thunder (recently for Hokutofuji)

what actually happens to a kesho mawashi after use?

does the sekitori keep it?....is it given back to the donator?....does the shisho keep it?

reason for asking:

sadanoumi was given a kesho mawashi from the chamber of commerce of austria back in the 80s and i was wondering where this one ended.......

tried at the donator's, but they did not know anything about the donation

Same as the yusho portraits, it belongs to the sekitori. He may keep it and later his family owns it, or donate it - back to the donor, the heya or elsewhere.

Back in the 80s means likely no trace of it on the net.

Hakuho with talento artist Tsurutaro Kataoka after the soken, in the sumo museum. Kataoka will design a set of kesho-mawashi for Hakuho, to be ready next spring. It will be presented by the new Hakuho Nagoya koenkai, formed in July.

Appeared today on Jiji: from Sponichi http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2013/03/27/kiji/K20130327005491770.html

On March 27th 2013 was the presentation to Hakuho from his Nagoya koenkai - with the designer, talento and painter Tsurutaro Kataoka

l.jpg

The one for Hakuho shows Acala (to which Kataoka feels attached) with white phoenixes, the attendants have the Nagoya symbols, the golden shachihoko on Nagoya castle. It was used that year (only?) for the dohyo-iri at the Ise shrine dohyo-iri, at the festivities for the renewal every 20 years of the shrine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqeHpt2svK4 and at the Nagoya-basho.

XXL (and very hard to download) pics of the original sketches and the kesho-mawashi on a Tsurutaro-museum blog: http://ameblo.jp/tsurutaromuseum/entry-12241995267.html

The kesho mawashi of Taiho that his grandson Naya will use for the shinjo-shusse hirou (likely on nakabi) has arrived at the heya. One he got when he was sanyaku or ozeki from the Hokkaido Colliery & Steamship Co. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/北海道炭礦汽船

A friend in Hokkaido had lent it (likely the original donor or related) and was asked to give it back. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201801170000095.html
