Any recommendation on individual songs from musicals?

Hey guys,

I've been bitten by the musical bug. So far i've listened to the famous song from cats, 'old man river' and Lee Marvin singing 'wandering star.'

Do you have any favourites? They don't have to be in English, i'd be just as interested in musical songs from around the world.

Try this:

Edit: I just now realized it's not about "music" in general but "musicals". Bummer.

Some of my favorites -

"Old Man River" from Showboat (1927)
"You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel (1945)
"Climb Ev'ry Mountain" from The Sound of Music (1959)
"If Ever I Would Leave You" from Camelot (1960)
"The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha (1965) (and if you're from the US, this version will absolutely floor you [4:00])
"Hey Big Spender" from Sweet Charity (1966)
"Corner of the Sky" from Pippin (1972)
"Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
"Memory" from Cats (1981)
"I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables (1985) (this is not the original performer, but I'm a sucker for Lea Salonga)
"On My Own" from Les Miserables (1985) (did I mention I'm a sucker for Lea Salonga?)
"Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera (1986)
"Last Night of the World" from Miss Saigon (1990) (oh yes, and Lea Salonga too)
"Defying Gravity" from Wicked (2003)
"For Good" from Wicked (2003) (from the Wicked: Studio Sessions, recorded years later)
("For Good" rehearsal/performance video)

Yes, that is a great song -- as the entire musical is a great composition, a great show, and gives an interesting take on a very well known story (at least for someone who has grown up with J.S. Bach's St Matthew's passion). The composer is a true genius with many highly original musicals to his name, each with unforgettable tunes.

My recommendations for whole musicals are (in no particular order) Jesus Christ Superstar, Scarlet Pimpernel, Notre Dame de Paris and, of course, Hair.

And since I'm on a roll - my favorite Sailor Moon musical number:

And have some Takarazuka performances:

I actually prefer this version to the original musical:

I just love Todoroki's voice:

Maybe we should open a Sailor Moon songs suggestion topic, I'd have a ton (including La soldier). (Punk rocker...)
