Basho Talk - Natsu Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

Ura put in a valiant try, but Tenkaiho had his number. Sato on the other hand played some very good defense against Chiyomaru.

Bad news for Amuuru, that knee might have dislocated. Endo losing by Kotenage to Gagamaru???

Ura came with the 3rd kesho-mawashi today (no pic yet) and had an exceptionally large applause - even for makuuchi standards: like Endo last basho, more than Osunaarashi then.

Looks like the owl really died...

No it was still stuck in John Gunning's throat after the bout was over.

Tenkaiho on beating Ura: "I was studying Ura videos. Even if I were to lose, I did not want to get caught in the izori move." Things he made sure of: "Don't let him get his head in, don't move forward, take your time." One thing he got from watching Ura's matches: "He always goes for the right leg."

Tenkaiho is from Kumamoto, and wants to wrestle as best he can and to support the people of Kumamoto as well.

Has anyone else noticed that the mythical four on the floor is not being enforced? (Sigh...)

Yeah they missed it on Gagamaru. The barker did it though and look where that got him. His tachi-ai is completely screwed.

I thought Tochinoshin stepped out before Aminishiki hit the deck?

And it has happened.... Aminishiki has broken something while pushing Tochinoshin out... He won the match but... then it goes to Tochinoshin.... not so clear...

Could it be his last bout?

Day 2 - Aminishiki did a wheel chair exit. Looked like he did in one of his knees again. The war horse will return next basho.

Edit: After reviewing the videos, the problem looks to be his left ankle rather than a knee.

I thought Tochinoshin stepped out before Aminishiki hit the deck?

For some reason they called it "tsukihiza" which I guess looking at how Aminishiki was falling both the gyoji and the shimpan felt that he could not save himself from that. I'm sure the monoii didn't happen because Aminishiki wasn't injured. They probably would have called a torinaoshi which Aminishiki would not have been able to do. However both rikishi did report that they each thought Tochinoshin stepped out first. Also it looks like Aminishiki's Achilles gave way, which is not good at all.

Day 2 - Shodai was completely psyched out from the time he set foot on the dohyo against Harumafuji.

Day 2 - Shodai was completely psyched out from the time he set foot on the dohyo against Harumafuji.

And he has yet to face Kisenosato, Hakuho, Kakuryu, Goeidou, Terunofuji. Trying to imagine him going 8-0 after that lineup.

Shodai has finally hit the big boys. And they are the only ones who can stop him. It will be a good lesson for him.

Gagamaru has had enough of people pushing him around and has decided to railroad everyone. I wish he would do this all the time and he would be an Ozeki. His Ozeki run starts here.

Nishikigi's feet haven't gone cold. Infact he seems to be doing better than before. What a massive improvement he has had in a single year.

Osunaarashi made a fool out of himself today, he was super unfocused to let MITAKEUMI henka him. Mitakeumi is a guy who always goes forward except today. Egyptian must have been super distracted and Mitakeumi saw it and took advantage.

Down in Juryo, Sato keeps dominating with pure skill. Ura also grasps a pushout victory. Tomorrow these two small colossi butt heads again.

Chiyonokuni's return to makuuchi seems inevitable at this moment. What a year he has had.

Down in Upper Makushita it is all Daiki. All Daiki.

But Sakamoto and Iwasaki are probably going to do well this basho too.

But who will win the Makushita Yusho? I will bet Oyanagi will take the whole thing.

Sandanme is a triple threat with Kotokamatani, Ishibashi and Kiribayama. Although I don't believe Kiribayama has a chance against these monsters.

Also the gutsiest rikishi: Hattorizakura the Great keeps his streak alive!

Yeah! Gagamaru has kept a low profile recently but now is his time to rise! All hail Lord Gaga, who will grace the Ozeki rank with his presence soon!

Shoudai does seem like he's about to hit the wall, but you never know. On the other hand, I'm sure there's plenty of rikishi who wish they could hit their wall against yokozuna level opponents.

Kisenosato's bout was a bit funny, it seemed life he was swatting away a particularly annoying fly buzzing in his face. He seemed in control every moment of the bout. But to Kotoyuuki's credit he did a lot better than yesterday.

Maybe they consider three on the tree "close enough." ;-)

Daiki vs Oyanagi should be VERY interesting this basho (if it happens), likely to be the Yusho decider

Does anyone know what's the longest streak where all Y/O (at least 1 in each) remain unbeaten at the start of a basho?
