Akinomaki 28,347 Posted April 20, 2016 (edited) The new exhibition till June 17th at the sumo museum is about the prizes in ozumo: Kensho are treated as one of them. Originally a prize like the bow of the bow twirling ceremony that also was given to the winning rikishi in the past. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20160420-OHT1T50036.html The present massive kensho parade only started on day 12 of the Natsu-basho 2000. Till then it was one banner per company. On the Tochinohana-Chiyotaikai bout, Nagatanien placed 2 kensho. After that companies increasingly began to place kensho in bulks on popular rikishi or bouts, being a cheap way of advertising. The record is still 1979 from last Aki-basho. http://www.sumo.or.jp/sumo_museum/display/list.html (no. 9) With Endo back and the new hopes doing good, we might break the 2000 mark at last this basho - unless kyujo of the main collectors prevent it. Akinomaki 28,347 Posted May 7, 2016 Endo has much less kensho than before - only Nagatanien stayed with him. At present Kisenosato is top with 191 fixed kensho, then Hakuho with 190 (but he has much more from being in the later/-test bouts), Kotoshogiku with 186. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20160507-OHT1T50134.html New kensho sponsor is JRA - Japan (keiba) racing association: 4 each day on the last bout. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20160506-OHT1T50176.html

Gurowake 2,370 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) I expected Gagamaru to be much higher. I guess most of the sponsors really have abandoned Endo. Edited May 9, 2016 by Gurowake

Akinomaki 28,347 Posted May 13, 2016 The Morinaga kensho is a disappointment. the “Morinaga Award,” which is a kensho from Morinaga Confectionary. This is the only prize that is determined by the votes of fans attending that day. They mark the bout that they are most interested in on a designated form. And the torikumi with the most votes will get the kensho placed on it.Of course, the winning rikishi will get the prize money, butthe box of caramel is given as an additional prize. In juryo at the time kensho weren't allowed either, but a then equivalent of the present Morinaga-sho got awarded by request of the fans to those 2 Wajima bouts. Apparently the NSK still had to give a special permission. This Sankei-Shimbun-sha-sho existed only for one year, apparently the form then allowed to write down the preferred bout - this Natsu basho I'll try to find the survey in the kokugikan, I missed it each time so far. I tried to find that designated form, but when I found the box to put in the votes, it said: "write the bout and your address on an empty box of Morinaga chocolate or caramel".I wouldn't call that a vote by fans attending that day, just a vote by Morinaga fans/customers attending that day.Of course the boxes are on sale in the kokugikan. Among those who voted for the bout with the most votes - that gets the kensho - 3 win a packet of 10 boxes of chocolate. In this case, the fans can vote for juryo like with the old Sankei award - apparently no form ever existed.

torquato 1,075 Posted May 22, 2016 There is a Japanese WP page about the prize money in Sumo: 懸賞 (相撲) According to that the record for the most kensho for a single rikishi during a tournament is held by Hakuho with 545 envelopes he got during hatsu-basho last year. This tournaments 486 kensho make it to 3rd place. 2nd place is Hakuho with 515 kensho in Kyushu 2010.
torquato 1,075 Posted May 22, 2016 Difference between first and second = 486 - 247 = 239 ( It´s a record?) I don't know what the record difference is between winner and runner up, but this time it's not. In the aforementioned Hatsu basho 2015 it was 376! Take a look at the kensho of that basho: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=33525&p=273914
