Halls for hon-basho

Recommended Posts

We can expect that the Ryogoku Kokugikan (Hatsu-, Natsu-, Aki-basho) will stay just that for the near future.

The Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium (Haru-basho) is presently sold to the name of Edion Arena Osaka, after being the Bodymaker Colosseum for while.

The Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium (Nagoya-basho) had its name on sale for 45 million yen per 3 year period, but no one wanted it at that price. They are thinking about offering it again.

The Fukuoka Kokusai Center (Kyushu-basho) seems to have no plans yet to sell naming rights.

Nagoya found a name buyer now - for 25 million yen a year, a 3 year contract, starting next month: Dolphins Arena is the name we will find as the location of the Nagoya basho. Bought by the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins co., Ltd., which belongs to Mitsubishi Electric - a B.league basketball team. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20180326/spo18032619090003-n1.html

All the commentators of the NHK 'Grand Sumo Highlights' show throughout Haru 2018 consistently referred to the venue as the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium.

Anyone knows if that's something to do with NHK policy on advertising?

It wouldn't surprise me.  From what I recall they try not to show the kensho banners too obviously as well.  NSK material did have the "Edion Arena" (in Katakana) on its poster, but also had the "Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium" immediately after that (in Kanji).

Yes, from what I've read it's being handled this way pursuant to Article 83 of the Broadcast Act, which covers the ban on advertising for NHK. (So it's not just in-house policy, but actual law.)

On a side note, as I insinuated in a post somewhere at some point during the basho, it's probably going to be the last year of "Edion Arena" - the naming rights contract expires in August.

The images of how the new hall should look when it is planned to open just in time for the 2025 Nagoya basho: room for up to 15 000 spectators, for sumo 11 000. Plenty of time to sell the naming rights and cover a bit of the expected construction costs of 30 billion yen.

Financing will be done using private capital provided by way of PFI http://www.sankei.com/west/news/190611/wst1906110023-n1.html

The actual design of the buildings will be made by the private contractor: who that will be is to be decided upon next year - and the construction should start in 2022.

The basho schedule for 2025 was released, with the new facility as (planned) location, called the Aichi International Arena https://www.sumo.or.jp/Admission/schedule/

And that Aichi International Arena already has sold the name rights to an international investor: IG group holdings bought it and the name will be IG Arena http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/1567534.html

For 10 years, for an undisclosed sum, but more than the over 5000 million yen for the naming rights of the new Es Con Field stadium in Hokkaido. http://newsdig.tbs.co.jp/articles/-/989695?display=1

The basho this year will for the last time take place in the Dolphins Arena.

The new Arena is a 5 storey building, building area 26,500 ㎡, total floor space 63,000 ㎡, building height 41m, the ceiling in the hall is 30m high - a maximum of now 17000 spectators including those standing - but at the basho the announcement always demands to not stand and watch, but go to your seat for that, so the 11000 seats will likely be the full capacity for a sell-out. The basho there starts on July 13th 2025, and this is the grand opening of the arena.

The NSK will have a special event before the Last Nagoya basho in the old arena, the first was 59 years ago. Nagoya chief Dewanoumi with team member Iwatomo met with the governor of Aichi and the mayor of Nagoya for PR.

But actually the full seat capacity at the Nagoya basho will be only 7800, the NSK announced it today. There will be more room in masu seat boxes than at the kokukigan or other venues and there will also be space to put things at the tamariseki, the best seats. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20241219-NYRL43PKINKLFBJEYMTSXVP47A/ - you can't take and put anything there in the kokugikan

- I guess the prices for this special comfort will be higher than that for the seats in the kokugikan

Oof. I guess they're leaving themselves some room for future modifications to increase the capacity if demand permits, but that definitely puts the kibosh on any ideas that Nagoya might become the "easy" honbasho for foreign visitors to acquire tickets.

Nagoya team head Dewanoumi was on location today and declared they aim for a sell-out - shouldn’t be difficult with the limited seat capacity and the present boom - Osaka was sold out in an instant. He's a bit anxious at a venue where he never did it before o - he mustn't fail in the year of 100 years of NSK.

To illustrate this, today the NSK held a PR event at a shopping mall in Togo town, Aichi - an 18cm bigger square for a masu seat box, 30% more space, enough to have 4 of also the bigger rikishi sit in it: Abi, Atamifuji, Wakamotoharu with Nagoya team Kumagatani-oyakata to prove it
