mikawa 1,794 Posted March 25, 2016 So, Onosho's 8 basho reign as the youngest sekitori comes to an end. Chances are, Sato's going to surpass his record

But hey, it keeps up the suspense... Terunofuji had no reason to aggravate his injury, and with Goeido motivated to fight, this is a case where no conspiracy is needed, just common sense. If you were actually expecting Aoiyama to give Kisenosato trouble, you need to watch more sumo. Kakuryu got the full Hakuho treatment. He has a poor record against Hakuho... as does everybody, really. Getting beaten by the best is not an unlikely outcome.
CT3* 331 Posted March 25, 2016 Terunofuji didn't show up. Goeido being "motivated" had little to do with it, imo.
Iginishiki2 8 Posted March 25, 2016 I agree - self-preservation in case of Terunofuji is the most likely reason, IMO, he got what he needed, no point in taking the risk this basho any more.
Morty 1,480 Posted March 25, 2016 I'd just like to acknowledge the effort of Shodai who has got 12 straight KKs and who did so at M6 on day 13 this basho. Watching him he is unhurried, competent, and seems to have the answers. In the Joi next basho, can't wait to see how he does.
Jyuunomori 226 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Let's hope Ura wins his next bout. If he does then his only loss will be to Sato and I think both of them will go to Juryo. Shodai truly is impressive. He could actually go for a double and win his last two bouts to go 10-5 twice in a row. And looking at the charts I think he may land in Makuuchi 1 next basho. :P Edited March 25, 2016 by Jyuunomori
Rob S. 42 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) If you were actually expecting Aoiyama to give Kisenosato trouble, you need to watch more sumo.I watch plenty of Sumo and Aoiyama is one of the few Rikishi that Kisenosato seems to consistently have trouble with. Kisenosato Winning 11 out of their 17 matchups isn't exactly total domination, and one of those matchups was a fusen win. Iginishiki2 8 Posted March 25, 2016 Yup, Shodai is slowly growing on me, he is not super explosive or flashy, mayhaps, but he is very efficient in his sumo. Also, Se Kotoyuuki next basho, will be interesting to see if it's a one-off peak or the beginning of a more regular performance at this level.

When Kotoyuki first cam up to Makuchi he seemed to have a lot of promise and then he got a very bad knee injury which set him back for a while. Maybe now he's healthy he is actually following through on that promise

But hey, it keeps up the suspense... Yeah, Kakuryuu was having the basho of his life till today, showing excellent, dominant sumo so far. What a totally unexpected upset, losing like that to Hakuhou.. Aoiyama? You could have questioned the match up itself, but really? Aoiyama threw the bout? For his makekoshi? Terunofuji will lose all his remaining bouts-got the KK, can't leave now at this stage, so he will do everything not to aggravate the 40 injuries he is suffering from. Come on, you could have brought up yesterday's Kakuryuu-Terunofuji bout. Now, THAT is Sumotalk stuff. YBF, the outcome of the three bouts you picked were easy to guess in advance, but not because of what you are insinuating. He has some of the same style leg work that Endo did before his knee exploded. He keeps a wide stance and is not easy to move sideways, because he is already there. A wide array of offensive tools and calm composure. Next basho will be a big test, I'm keen to see how he fares.
Gurowake 3,922 Posted March 25, 2016 Kasugano-beya shut out of victories over Ozeki and Yokozuna despite three of them in the joi and only having one match skipped (Aoiyama vs. Goeido). All three of them look to be out of the top 16 next basho, though if the two non-Japanese ones win their last two they might still be in line to face the Isegahama Yokozuna and Ozeki at M3w or M4 (which will partly depend on whether Aminishiki is still going to be up there blocking out another match). Tochiozan looks completely out of the top-ranked picture.

Maybe now he's healthy he is actually following through on that promise Well, as McBugger first predicted, Kotoyuki got his 10 :-D I was thinking they were gonna set up the Myogiru match for senshuraku, but it will be happening tonight. Although it sounds like a "battle for the special prize" match, I feel that Kotoyuki has already earned at least one, and depending on the number of wins, might have two ;-) Let the Ozeki Run begin HHHHUUUU!!!! (seems the crowd is REALLY getting into it) Thank You IchinOzeki for coming back so soon, I know you can get ONE MORE. >>Edit<< Thanks again to Moti for including the bark and the owl (Laughing...) Hope you can visit Hawaii one day, would love to take you around! Edited March 25, 2016 by ScottyJoyJrBebe

Some of Kise's wins over Aoiyama have been very close calls too. I don't think there was anything untoward about their match today, but this one of those cases of a rikishi consistently having issues with someone ranked significantly lower (is there a specific sumo term for this?). On another note, I am pulling for Kasei to grab a sanyaku spot...he'll be out of his depth there but he seems like one of the nicest guys in the sport. rzombie1988 157 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Please take this as an on-off personal comment, as it would bore me to death to rekindle the youknowwhat-discussion: What smelly sumo by all of Terunofuji, Aoiyama and Kakuryu today. But hey, it keeps up the suspense... Aoiyama is never good. That's why he's where he is at. Once the intial tachi-ai slapdowns are done he's done. Thoughts: - Not a real exciting day to today. - Eagerly awaiting Hakuho/Harumafuji. Been watching Hak and what he does is this - he does a right forearm then slips both hands under the belt and goes forward. Harumafuji always works to the left so if anyone can beat him, it's him. - Wish Terunofuji would just take the last two days off. He got the KK and he has no other purpose right now. - I think we've shown that the Koto basho win was a fluke. I didn't see much of it, so of course he won that one - just too many days off that kept me behind. We know what his strengths are(can get low, grabs the belt and has a solid belly pushing game) and we know his weaknesses(going too low, not looking and really being limited overall). - Thought Satoyama should have been able to pull off the win today. He needs to use his submarine move to grab the belt under better and then lift up some to get the best leverage. - I saw that Ishiura match and was rather impressed. - I liked seeing Ikioi out slap Gaga. Nice job. - Kyokutaisei is staying alive at 6-7. Tommorow: Not expecting any real surprises as a whole. Hak should be able to beat Koto easy, Goeido should be able to take out Ikioi and Kisen should pick up the win. Curious to see who wins the battle for the 3rd yokozuna this basho with Kak and Harumafuji. Edited March 25, 2016 by rzombie1988
Yubinhaad 11,546 Posted March 25, 2016 Assuming he participates tomorrow, Kagamio will be the eighth sekitori to make an immediate return to action the day after a fusenpai in the 15-day basho era (since 1949 Natsu). Previous cases: Narutoumi, 1950 Hatsu Ouchiyama, 1951 Natsu Fujitayama, 1953 Natsu (Juryo) Hiranoto, 1957 Haru (Juryo) Tokibayama, 1968 Kyushu Mainoumi, 1999 Kyushu (Juryo) Kotoyuki, 2015 Haru

I'm not going there, am I?] WHAT was I insinuating? I said smelly, as in "put in as much effort as my son when he's told to [insert household chore of choice]". I found enough sumo this basho to refute any global conspiracy blabber with ease. I'm not constructing one out of three bouts that genuinely annoyed me for their, say, mono-competitive character. It's simply dissapointing to see something like this so deep in the basho so high in the ranks. It always has been.

808morgan 805 Posted March 26, 2016 It annoys me so much when the audience does chantings like that. They mustve put so much pressure on Gōeidō. Leave the cheering for after the bout. Yeah and it will only anger Hak so it would be better for Goeido if they didn't chant!
