Basho Talk - Haru Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

I also wouldn't count out Yamaguchi. Whatever happened to him he appears to have recovered a great deal in the past year.

Yes, I actually didn't notice his long kachikoshi streak. Something terrible must have happened to him in 2014 but now he really seems to be back on track.

Take it with a pinch of 2ch-flavoured salt, but I read on some 2ch board last year that Yamaguchi was diagnosed with a thyroid condition and had treatment for it. (I dunno...)

NHK mentioned earlier this basho that he has Graves'_disease

It annoys me so much when the audience does chantings like that. They mustve put so much pressure on Gōeidō. Leave the cheering for after the bout.

Thoughts:

- Hakuho just blew Goeido out of the water. Goeido lost at the style he's been doing and badly. I think Harumafuji's style is going to clash with Hak though.

- Kisenosato was fine but should have won. He's back to hoping for people to lose...again.

- Notice how Koto won today. He didn't blind rush in. He looked where he was going and saved himself from a henka. Aminishiki didn't even think to try it because he knew.

- Terunofuji hit a Harumafuji special today in a surprising turn of events

- Ichinojo went back to being passive today. Because the stalling was so helpful in knocking him down to the lower half of the banzuke.

- Sokokorai was really good today. I don't know if he has the body or style but he seems smarter than the average sumo.

It's a pity that Kise lost again. Hope he will win the remaining. A 13-2 is good enough to put him on a position for promotion and another 13-2 next basho may send him to yokozuna. Bad luck for him to live with Hakuho ...... although he is among the few who can legitimately beat Hakuho.

13-43 head to head seems kind of weak. then again he is going against the GOAT.

also, back-to-back 13-2, with NO yusho doesn't sound like promotion material to me. not sure how to query this in the DB. (seems unlikely that 13-2 wouldn't be a yusho at least once, but in the case that it doesn't happen, the promotion would feel pretty lackluster without a cup)

It may have also served to motivate (read: annoy) Hakuho. Either way, Goeido got punished.

-Ichinojo back to IchinoSLO :( but still a chance for 10 wins.

-Kotoyuki just dominating once again, he can seal the deal against Takarafuji today, and get 10 wins to boot. HHHHUUUU!!!!

-Terunofuji PLS withdraw and take May off.

-Although Hakuho was a beast, I for one still wanna believe that a play-off finish is possible. That would now depend on Harumafuji and his ability to get the better of Hakuho. 3 days to go, we shall see.

Hopefully but a slim chance. This basho's Haru and Kaku have less than 20% of chance to beat Hakuho and Geeku has about 5%. Less than 50% even added together. The chance of one of the two-loss rikishi to win the remaining 3 is about 70%. So the chance of seeing a play-off is about 30%.

Thank You very Much for taking the time to compute the odds ;-)

30% is 1 out of 3, that's actually not so bad. If this was last year, might be less than 10% (Eh?)

13-43 is pretty amazing when you compare it to all the other rikishi that Hak has faced during his career. Kise wins about 20% of the time against Hak, which is a better winning record than almost every other rikishi who isn't a Yokozuna (ie Asa and HF and even they don't have a winning record against him). By contrast Kak is only 5-37, and of retired rikishi Kaio went 6-27, Kotooshu went 10-35 and Baruto went 3-25. Asa has the best record of 12-13. No-one who counts has a long term winning record against Hak. So it is about what percentage you can post against him and Kise's is pretty phenomenal really

//Back to Real Life//

Hakuho Press conference:

"You know they say all men are created equal. But you look at me and you look at Kisenosato and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you compete with another rikishi for the Yusho, you got a 50-50 chance of winning. But I'm the greatest Yokozuna of all time and I'm not normal. So you got a 25 per cent - AT BEST - to win the Cup. And then you add Harumafuji and Goeido to the mix, your chances of winning drastically go down. You see, in your matches against Harumafuji and Goeido you got a 33 and 1/3 chance of winning. But I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning cause Harumafuji KNOWS he can't beat me and he's not even gonna try. So Kisenosato, you take your 33 and 1/3 chance, minus my 25 per cent chance and you got an 8 and 1/3 chance of winning the Yusho. But then you take my 75 per cent chance of winning and then add the 66 and 2/3 per cent chance, I got a 141 and 2/3 chance of winning the Haru Basho . Senior Kise, the numbers don't lie and they spell disaster for you here in Osaka." (Sadly this makes not really much sense or not as much as Prof. Steiners math, should have done this before Kisenosato and Hakuho fought)

Or maybe he would just use an alternative Scott Steiner qoute "Who the f*ck is better than me?!"

It really speaks to Hakuho's greatness when one considers that losing to him ONLY 80% of the time is something to be praised.

Osu yusho!!

And excellent basho for Chiyoshoma, who has handed losses to Osu, Endo, and Nishikigi.

Brodi fighting for his kachikoshi today. Good luck to him.

Well, he lost and finishes the basho makekoshi (3-4)

Still a long road ahead for him.

Just noticed that Kotoyuki'so hands are so heavily taped that he has trouble picking up the kensho envelope with just one hand - a bit like a LEGO figure :-)
