NSK just released info on Sokokurai. Yet again, influenza being quite persistent this season.

anyone know why Asayamabana is out this basho? hope he's not too depressed from a subpar peformance the past couple basho, and quiting.

I get the feeling though that he thought he was going to rocket through the ranks, on the back of his muscles. really shows that technique is king.

No idea why he's out, but he's still included on the win-loss chart on the Takasago homepage. In the past that stable has been very quick to remove rikishi who have retired (even before their intai is officially acknowledged), so he probably hasn't quit.

Is there a technical difference between fusen and kyujo?

Is there a technical difference between fusen and kyujo?

One is the process and the other is the outcome - kyujo means going (or being) absent from the tournament, fusen(pai) is the bout result that, well, results from going absent.

Meanwhile, Shotenro has withdrawn from his Day 5 bout, no specific information in the press yet.

Good to know Chiyonoumi hasn't quit Ozumo on a whim, he definitely seems to be one for the future.

Reported to be due to acute lower back pain :-(

I never understand what is so cute about these injuries.

Perhaps he demanded a less silly shikona and they refused.

Two weeks estimated recovery time. With his precarious position at the bottom of juryo I'd normally guess he'll be back soon enough, but after his 1-3 start he's only a few kyujo days away from getting demoted for sure anyway...
