Speaking of food prizes, I think we need to follow Reddit's example and set up the Guess the Macaron Colour or Guess the Food Prize for the November tournament.

I think NHK should televise the excruciatingly long yushoceremony, including the award of the giant fake macaron. If for no other reason than I like knowing Pierre Herme is still out there in the civilized world, doing business.

They MUST show their 6pm news whenever the macaron is appeared or not. But we can watch whole post tournament presentation (trophies, macaron, sanbon jime) on Abema’s coverage

Sorry, came to the forum recently and didn't really notice the macaron or food poll. But have to say, after research, where's the fun if the macaron is always green, pink (and the rare gold)? 

Also I wanted to ask - the giant macaron is just a plush toy or fake right? It's not real? And what exactly is the prize? Like a box of macarons? 

What is the weirdest food gift you have seen presented? The tower of mushrooms Tochinoshin had has got to be weirdest in my opinion.

I don't know about Kumamoto, but Kagoshima (further south of Kumamoto on Kyushu) has been often compared to Naples - both being by bays, active volcanos, and inhabited by relatively hot-tempered people. Might have something to do with the climate...

The friendship awards from other countries come first after after the main trophies, like the Prime minister's cup without an extra sumo of money, and only a few of it with some edible stuff attached, the award order in the ceremony lately varies. (Kyushu 2015 - another blog: o)

France: box with 22 macarons, have to be consumed within 4 days

The governor and mayor awards from the location where the basho is usally held (July in Tokyo had the ones from Nagoya), no money, half of it with food. Each year they select local producers to supply a different selection of goodies, as PR for the region.

Osaka governor: e.g. shabu shabu beef, umeshu brandy and honey - a wide range of local products that changes each year, details for 2019: http://www.pref.osaka.lg.jp/miryokuzukuri/sumo/index.html , 2018 and 2015

Aichi governor: (1992) 2009: 50 000 boiled quail eggs, 2010 canceled due to the gambling scandal, like all extra awards, (1986, 1999, 2004/7/8) 2011-18, 2020: Nagoya kochin 名古屋コーチン chicken: 100kg meat, 1000 eggs, 2019 Mikawa pork - 5 whole. Other times 500kg asari clams (2001) or unagi (1987) - it varies each year ->list of awards 1985-2010

Fukuoka governor: a year’s supply of Fukuoka nori, Amao strawberries, Hakataka jidori chicken and Genkitsukushi rice - 2019

No 2 yushos in a row for Daiesho, but I wanted to thank Akinomaki for posting the updated food prizes. I'm so glad to know the boys are still getting macarons from Pierre Herme. I'd really like some decadent chocolate dessert or a mille fuieille (sp?) from that patisserie myself.

Wakatakakage yesterday was with tsukebito Wakatakamoto at the Fukushima prefectural office to report the yusho and got an extra Fukushima governor award (it's only for Tokyo basho), the representative rice bale (for the 1 ton of ten no tsubu rice) this time from the governor on location (he used to come to the award ceremony in the kokugikan)  http://www.fct.co.jp/nnn_news/news97pe1mg32u11rgs40f.html

Fixed all 3 - the articles didn't mention him, he's just the tsukebito, that should have made me suspicious, and I didn't take a closer look, neither at the photo nor the one caption above that mentioned him. I should have used the basho overview list, that would have marked the photo as with Wakatakamoto.

It's the time of harvest for the Fukui plums: only those processed at the co-op fruit sorting facility in Narude, Wakasa town are called Fukui plums.
