Taizeniki 0 Posted July 17, 2004 Greetings from the wide open spaces of Texas. (Shaking head...) I have been an avid but shy fan (a little afraid of posting unlearned things to mailing lists and forums) of sumo for about 8 years. My interest began when I visited Japan in 1996 as a touring manager for Houston Grand Opera and the show "Porgy and Bess" which made stops in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Anyway, my time there came just after Hatsu and highlights were being shown on TV. It was love at first uwatenage--my favorite kimarite! My life is now occupied with realites as a wife, mom and Methodist pastor. (Yes, I left the opera to become a preacher-woman, which is another story; (see: Where I Work for details of my current life) Fear not, I am not a bible-thumping fundamntalist censor come to "save" the forum from hell, just a simple sumo-loving vicar. My son (who is 6) also loves sumo and was quite sad when Musashimaru retired and watches (and vicariously re-inacts) Dale's replays with me during honbasho. My favorite rikishi are Takanowaka (for the very feminine and illogical reasons that he plays the piano and has a nice face) :-) , Kotoosho, Ama, Tochiazuma, Kokkai and Asashoryu. Blessings to all... ciao.

Kashunowaka 300 Posted July 17, 2004 My favorite rikishi are Takanowaka (for the very feminine and illogical reasons that he plays the piano and has a nice face) Hey, that's as good reason as any. Taizeniki 0 Posted July 17, 2004 waiting for an opera about sumo.... there is plenty of drama and tragedy in sumo to make a good one, I think.... only there are no heroines with tuburculosis... Mrs. Uchidate, perhaps :-P . Thanks for the welcome.

Mark Buckton 1 Posted July 18, 2004 Cheers from AustraliaZenjimoto ta and good on ya, zenjimoto... Welcome Taizeniki. Q if I may - why did you choose the word 'ta' ????? Nothing of import but never really heard it from an American before and was interested this time. (linked to Zenji being in OZ just now?) PS - Fuji - more than a few sumo fans and Christians here I feel.
Fujisan 533 Posted July 18, 2004 Fuji - more than a few sumo fans and Christians here I feel. Yes but I bet I'm the only fundamentalist- Or at least the only one who will admit it.

Mark Buckton 1 Posted July 18, 2004 Fuji - more than a few sumo fans and Christians here I feel. Yes but I bet I'm the only fundamentalist- Or at least the only one who will admit it. But fundamentalism - even in its most watered down of interpretations only ensures discrimination does it not? Of other faiths I mean not race, sex, age etc.

Taizeniki 0 Posted July 19, 2004 I am waiting for new pro-sumo entrants from the US.... anyone joining? Hoshidango: I'm waiting too. No one is joining that I am aware of... not that I have my finger on the pulse of sumo in the US. (Annoyed...) The last one, I believe, was Jason Walker from here in dear old Texas. I kept in touch with Kagamifuji for a little while via email, but he has vanished from view. (Applauding...)

Taizeniki 0 Posted July 19, 2004 Maybe we can make a little SF girls club -no age limitation, of course (Annoyed...) women of the SF, let us take our place on the dohyo! I think an estrogen inhanced sub section of the SF is a lovely idea. Perhaps we could name it the Ota SF... in honor of one who dares not besmirch the beloved clay hill. Mark Buckton 1 Posted July 19, 2004 Welcome Taizeniki. I am waiting for new pro-sumo entrants from the US.... anyone joining? The US /Californian sumo assoc mailed me in about November / December regarding asking Azumazeki to consider 2 potential candidates they had. I mentioned the (then) newbie Kosei (Chinese) in Azumazeki and also the 1 foreigner rule - never heard from them again so guess they didn't like the news. Don't know if they looked elsewhere. (Laughing...)
