Basho Talk - Hatsu Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

I for one have not been intrigued by Goeido in his ozeki tenure. So far he has not managed 10 wins in a basho as an ozeki yet. His lackluster performance runs very similar right now to another former ozeki who's promotion was not without it's controversy.

Although inasmuch as it was even a controversy (I'm not sure I'd go that far), it was for exactly the opposite reason - Miyabiyama was so early in his career that people weren't sure if he's the real deal or just a guy who hadn't been found out yet (it turned out to be the latter, and then injuries cropped up to kill any chance he might have had of developing beyond that stage), while with Goeido everybody was already pretty sure he's not the real deal and was just hoping he could be a super-sekiwake type of ozeki for a while, as arguably Kotoshogiku has been and Kotooshu was for a long time.

Clearly Goeido has had injuries as well, which hasn't helped his cause, but that's always the problem when somebody is only marginally above the minimum standard required: it doesn't take much going wrong to reach a failure state.

I think Kotoshogiku heard me and decided he would fill the role of making it interesting this basho. I am definitely happy to be a sumo fan right now where the Hakuho hegemony is no longer absolutely certain and there's an exciting question about who might actually win it this time!

Gaburi-gambare!

Former Maegashira 8 Daido announced his retirement today after losing today, which made him makekoshi. He was trying to see if he could get back into Juryo, but obviously that did not happen. He will be using the Onogawa kabu for the time being.

That's worthy of its own thread, IMHO.

Who is that everybody you are referring to? (Japanese oozumo related people and their statements is what I would like to read)

“He (Kotoshogiku) is better than he’s ever been,” Hakuho said. “I thought I had room to work with, but I was on the straw before I knew it.”

from the Japan Times.

In Honbasho talk or in the Oozumo forum?

C'mon, you know full well that nobody would actually say anything that approaches "this guy kinda sucks, but we're hoping for the best." The hush-hush nature in how his ozeki run was handled and the general lack of public comments expecting him to push on to yokozuna (the usual thing with actually promising new ozeki) spoke loud and clear.

In Honbasho talk or in the Oozumo forum?

(Laughing...) The eternal question with intai threads. I'd say Ozumo Discussions, though the moderators might disagree.

When I made the thread about Wakanosato I had posted in Ozumo, so I posted the new thread there.

Kyokutaisei, the guy in the documentary we have all seen, has gone makekoshi at J9w today. A bit sad, always rooting for this guy.

Hakuho said Kotoshogiku was almost perfect in today's bout, according to the English commentator.

His look says a lot. Looking behind his back toward the hanamichi and the end of the day... Nervous anticipation? I sure as hell have it.

That face would make my grandma smile. She hasn't been afraid to tell me that she is not a fan of Hakuho.

Goeido must be injured...no other explanation for his dramatic loss of form since his pre-promotion days.

For what its worth, he needs to win two out of his last three to not fall behind Miyabiyama in win % as an ozeki...

He is currently 3rd worse in the postwar area, ahead only of Daiju and Miyabiyama by a very small margin.

Brody lost today, making him 2-4. This is his first makekoshi after 3 consecutive KK tournaments from the start.
