A very brief update on Baruto and a few pictures. He has 70 head of cattle on his farm in Laane-Viru County, and has started (or plans to start) a travel agency with the aim of bringing more Japanese tourists to Estonia.

He visited Fukushima-city on the 6th, talking to the mayor. He expressed his wish to support Fukushima. with help from wife and friends, especially aid in building up the children's strength.

Now ex-Baruto (30) will join the professional fighting circuit. Not standard pro-wrestling but mixed martial arts RIZIN (former PRIDE): "I love martial arts. I want to aim to become the world's strongest fighter." He plans to have his debut fight on New Year's Eve (where there used to be the K-1 top event in the past). His ring name will be decided later. After intai he had continued to train and lost about 30kg from a peak of 189kg.
He plans to train with K-1 legend Peter Aerts (soon 45) in November - Akebono had failed miserably in K-1.

Hm, initially I thought that he's run into some financial trouble that would drive him to do this since I didn't think that he'd have the inclination to do something like this. Especially cause he doesn't have much training in martial arts other than sumo and that doesn't really cut it in mma. But reading the interview I really get the impression that he's just bored and genuinely interested in doing some martial arts again, and the money is a bonus. I hope that's true.

I have to admit that my heart kind of sank when reading this news. Although it is great that he is interested and motivated for new endeavors, I hope that he is more successful in MMA than Akebono's K-1 debacle. The former yokozuna's attempts was just a sad and shameful spectacle. No question that I highly respect him as the 64th yokozuna in history, but although then he is no longer affiliated with sumo, he was still using Akebono as his ring name, doing a pre dohyo iri before his K1 bouts...or was that puroresu? An absolute disappointment for former yokozuna holding on to the past with a losing record.

MMA is that really martial arts?? It lacks purity and true art in a sense that really it is only a disordered blend of fighting. If Baruto sees this through I seriously am hoping he does not mirror the many rikishi who have moved onto flashy forms of insanely overproduced sports entertainment.

I have never heard that some kind of ideological purity was required for a martial art to be that.

If martial arts are to be thought of as systems for effective hand-to-hand combat, then of course MMA is really martial arts. It's more than a little snobbish to insist otherwise.

As far as comparisons with Akebono go, I think Baruto has much more sound fundamentals. I'd be primarily worried that his joints may not be quite up to par after the stress of sumo, but perhaps he's allowed himself enough time to heal.

Martial 'arts' are not art. Not in the slightest. I detest the mis-use of language. Words have meaning.

Beethoven was an artist. Cage-fighters are crude entertainers at best. Art must express that which makes us human. One tattooed muscle-head beating another (wo)man to a pulp doesn't qualify.

I'm not an MMA fan; I just think that being a purist about fighting styles is a bit pointless. And that was not a pummeling. If you want to see a conversation like that, go to the comments section of any YouTube video where practitioners of different martial arts are sparring with each other. Believe me, I spoke most gently.
