A sumo history researcher collects song recordings of rikishi etc. that were on sale and held an event where he played them and told stories about the rikishi.

Wakanohana II/Wakamisugi: Naki-bokuro (mole under the eye - from crying) 若三杉「泣きぼくろ」

Kotokaze (Oguruma-oyakata): Mawari-michi (detour): from sekiwake a drop to makushita and then to ozeki

Tokoyama Tokoju: Hare-sugata furedaiko (sumo jinku)

Jesse (Takamiyama) made a record (at least a single) back in the late-70s

Masuiyama's song debut was in 1972. His 2nd song "Sonna Yuko ni horemashita" (1974) had at first sold 600 000 times - the record company then went bankrupt and at the new one he for the first time got a royalty contract. Afterwards another 650 000 records were sold.

In 1978 he won a best hit award for 1.3 million sold records of his 1977 song "Sonna onna no hitori-goto" and also had a chance for the best record of the year award, but didn't get it. Looks like he also got an offer for the NHK year end kouhaku uta-gassen song festival, but apparently the NSK refused.

Shukan post had a longer list recently of the principal records by rikishi, till song recordings were prohibited by the NSK. http://www.news-postseven.com/archives/20170204_488914.html

●Kitanofuji『ネオン無情』Neon mujou(heartlessness)(1967)
sold 500 000 times. Later that year he published an LP『北の冨士“艶歌”をうたう』"Kitanofuji sings enka"

●Hanada (later Takanohana)『男なみだのブルース』Otoko-namida (tears of a man) no blues(1969)
debut song the year after entering makuuchi the first time

●Masuiyama『そんな夕子にほれました』Sonna Yuko no horemashita(1974)

●Takanohana I『貴ノ花 男の花道』Takanohana - Otoko no hanamichi(1975)
as ozeki, folk song style - the B side was sumo jinku

●Ryuko『沈丁花』Jinchouge - winter daphne(1977)
debut song after intai, then left the NSK and turned TV talent

●Masuiyama『そんな女のひとりごと』Sonna Onna no hitori-goto(1977)

●Kaiketsu『男の旅愁』Otoko no ryoshu - a man's travel loneliness (1977)

●Takamiyama『ジェシー・ザ・スーパーマン』Jessie the superman(1979)
disco sound and Jessie shouting "superman": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_m3EWdzEb8

●Kotokaze『まわり道』Mawari-michi(1982)
 debut song

●Kotokaze『東京めぐり愛』Tokyo meguri-ai(1984)
 duett with Ishikawa Sayuri: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZHL9jBA1V4

●Asashio『ほたる川』Hotaru-gawa (river of fireflies)(1984)
debut song released while kadoban after kyujo

I still have the record sleeve.  Don't know what happened to the record itself.

For some reason this news apparently hadn't made it to the forum - Nikkan reminds of an event from one year ago: Hakuho then became the first active yokozuna after 37 years ago Wajima to record a CD as a singer

Sumire Uesaka had a concert in the kokugikan: Uesaka Sumire's hitori-zumo psychedelic jungyo. With a warning to fans from overseas: "This is not sumo, just a joke. If you saw this and got interested in sumo, please watch real torikumi." The first half of the show was in pro-wrestling fashion, the 2nd sumo styled - there she performed with the dosukoi dancers.

A clip of the show - to be shown on a net TV channel for Japan only.

Youtube killed it!

Anyway, this is an interesting song that came up in the background of the asahi sumo elections:

There is some weird talking but it gets to a real song at some point.

Most of the lyric is either Gotsan Desu or Dosukoi. Gotsan desu is what rikishi say when they mean arigtou gozaimasu (thank you) I guess. Dosukoi is kind of like unff or erghh when the rikishi puts his back into it.

The rapping part is a bunch of kimarite.

This is the best Japanese parody song I ever heard - in the style of the Gegege no Kitaro anime OP song

Instead of a demon ghost, a low ranked sumotori sings - and not of the good "life" of a demon, but the hard one of a rikishi

 - e.g. with "today beaten by a senior, one day it's my turn to beat"

A must for any sumo fan who understands Japanese (and maybe I'll have the time some day to show more of the text)

only audio though - just this pic the whole time:

So hopefully this isn't too far off topic for this thread, I wanted to share it and this seemed the most appropriate place even though they aren't exactly songs...

Anyway, for those out there interested in sumo related music - this has to be one of the well, most unlikely and unusual recordings ever. Basically, Japanese music producer Soichi Terada (he's made lots of interesting stuff in various genres - Disco, Rock, House music, Hip/Trip Hop etc) once decided to make an entire Sumo themed album, unusually the genre he chose was Drum N Bass. As a producer Soichi is extremely collectable and has a serious cult following, his most famous 12" currently goes for around £500-£700 if you can find a copy, and if you so decided you wanted a copy of "Sumo Jungle [Grandeur]", it would set you back about £100 or so on vinyl. He also released a couple of singles from the album (with some different mixes of tracks as well too) that have (I think) really cool artwork:

R-6722447-1431345474-9571.jpeg.jpg  R-6722485-1431345431-4191.jpeg.jpg

Track titles include the likes of: "Yokozuna Beach Chillin'", "Hakeyoi Gyohji Referee" and "Grand Senshuuraku" and the album features a fair few samples of Israel Kamakawiwoʻole who has featured in this thread before

So here is the one and only Japanese experimental Drum n Bass Sumo concept album ever recorded (at least to my knowledge...), its pretty niche, but hopefully of interest to some people out there:

Not a song, but I won't change the thread title

Xe (Kise) is a piece by percussionist Yoshiko Kanda http://www.yoshiko-kanda.com/

She published it last year as "Sumo suite for 2 piano", and this March she performed for the first time "Xe II" with her percussion ensemble, 30 minutes with a play performance attached.

Xe rehearsal excerpt for the percussion ensemble festival 2018 "Shin-gi-tai" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o224BMtxAtg

For the main performance she had asked Takasago-beya's yobidashi Kunio for instructions in the proper sumo way to beat the taiko.

Ever heard of JACSHA? 日本相撲聞芸術作曲家協議会 - Japan Association of Composers for Sumo Hearing Arts http://jacsha.com/ - pronounced jakusha, which as an ordinary word means weak and vulnerable persons 弱者

I noticed them today when they posted a video on their YT channel, shiko 四股1000. Shiko Ichinoya style, who taught them - on the right with the 3 members:

According to a 2019 Nikkei article, this trio is writing an opera based on the career of Futabayama.

Ex-Ichinoya,Takasago-beya manager till the end of this year (when he reaches kanreki), did a lecture today with JACSHA composer Nomura at the Sumidagawa Sumi-yume art project symposium on Tanabata - https://sumiyume.jp/event/tanabata2020/, part of events to celebrate the birth of Hokusai 260 years ago - this part for sumo having its routs in Tanabata: the first bout of Nomino-Sukune with the tenno watching, in the Heian period, sumo events were held on Tanabata at the Imperial court: sumahi no sechie 相撲節会.

Ichinoya talks about the first Takasago Uragoro (Takamiyama), who created the present Takasago-beya and reorganized the sumo organization close to the present form.

Nomura talked about the creation of a new sumo-mono 30min. shamisen folk-ballad about the 1st Takasago - the performance of the work by the Hokusai band will be posted later on YT.

Then it was time for Hokusai, Ichinoya presented the Hokusai manga related to sumo and did his specialty, explanations of  sumo basic stances and movements.

Ichinoya will go freelance next year.
