What is this? Jesse Kuhaulua Bronze hand owned by David Jones

感謝狀,the three largest words, mean roughly "certificate of gratitude" or "certificate of thanks". I don't know how else to translate 狀 except for "certificate", but its basically a paper or something shaped like it which has some words on it commemorating a period of time or an achievement, which you can hang on your wall or display. Its very common in Asia, you get one for winning sports contests in school or being at the top of your class, stuff like that.

From what little I can make out with my limited knowledge, it was given to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of something (presumably his trophy presentation duties?). The parts to the left of the medal read (from right to left), "June 12, 1991 / Nihon Sumo Kyokai (Japan Sumo Association) / Rijicho (chairman) Futagoyama Katsuji / Mr. David M. Jones".

Somebody else will be able to help with the more useful part of the inscription to the right. :-)

Edit: Just to add, the medal design is the official crest of the Association.

Very interesting, thanks. I was not expecting it to be sumo related.

The text on the right says, roughly, "this is to show gratitude for your dedication over the last thirty years to the development of sumo."

June 22nd, 1991.

Dear Kozjan,

My name is Daniel Jones and I am David Jones' eldest son. I just came across your 2015 comments regarding my father and Jesse's (Takamiyama's) bronze handprint. After my father's death in Omaha in 2005, my mother moved to Selinsgrove to live with my younger brother Douglas. She apparently opened the locker at that time.

If I can answer any of your questions, I'd be happy to do so.

Sincerely,

Daniel G. Jones
