Basho Talk - Kyushu Basho 2015 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

Recommended Posts

Absolutely hating Ichinojo's lack of belt working and trying to win matches just by size. It's not working and I can seriously see him going 3-13 at this rate.

Aoiyama/Kisenosato was a close call. Even though they gave it to Kisenosato, I think this was still a good bout for Aoiyama. It should give him some encouragement that he can be more.

Hak's winning move was pure class.

Nice to see some effort out of Gagamaru today.

Toch just didn't get the grip against Harumafuji today. He got locked out of getting a grip on the belt.

Hakuho - awesome yaguranage

Shohozan - uwatenage, move along

Hahaha, i didn't mean that, of course shohouzan movement was awesome, it's just so rare to see a yaguranage. i really thought that hakuho had lost that one today.

that's not what I meant :)

What I meant is that Shohozan's throw looks very similar to Hakuho's (ok, maybe less impressive) but it wasn't called a yaguranage. Or am I completely wrong?

As far as I see it, Shohozan's leg didn't have contact.

Almost (Thinking in depth...)

But really... why Hakuho can be so awesome :-O

Chiyootori vs Shohozan match was a good one. Shohozan looking more like the usual Hakuho in that one.

Do you mind if I steal one of these for my profile pic?

Ok that was pretty cool

And the gyoji is clearly looking at the feet...
His view of Okinoumi's arm hitting was blocked by Hakuho's leg.

Gaga-Mitakeumi was fun stuff....really enjoyed watching that. I imagine that it doesn't feel good to have Gaga crashing down on you like that though!

Excellent reversal by Hak. I thought it was obvious that he won, so I was very surprised a mono-ii was called until I realised that the gyoji had actually given the win to Okinoumi!

You agree that Kise was lucky?

No, why? Bad footwork is part of Aoiyama's package. It makes no sense to arbitrarily declare that it's "lucky" when a rikishi is profiting from one particular weakness of an opponent, or when he's profiting from it in a particular way. Kisenosato was pushing and Aoiyama was retreating, and it resulted in a loss for Aoiyama. That's all that happened. On other days Aoiyama's bad footwork means he simply gets bowled over, same thing just with a different outcome. Nobody would claim that's lucky for the opponent.

One of the many parts of Aoiyama's package such as being too heavy, lack of balance, lack of actual technique, etc.

I was hoping and patiently waiting for that gif ;-)

Okinoumi's no small man either. Even after eight hours after that match, I'm still amazed by Hakuho's strength and technique.

Yeah he is big, Yoshikaze is bigger than I thought, I always thought he was a tad smaller. I have waited outside the Kokugikan and watched them go by, never been near Hakuho etc. because they never go in that way. Okinoumi was pretty intimidating, I thought Tochinoshin looked the scariest, Ichi looks huge in person, I don't know how they move him! Hakuho does have a special body for this, strength and agility just for moving people out of a ring onto the ground....

Shikimori Inosuke isn't going to make Kimura Shōnosuke, is he?

Agreed, that was quite a shocking error from the ref. I mean, Hakuho landed on top of Okinoumi, it was plain utchari-like pancaking

Know what? I am cheering for Mitakeumi, he's got tenacity. Also glad my man Osunaarashi was able to get a win after a tough week. Such a good day of sumo, lots of kimarite I had to run back and watch over and over again.

I don't think that's relevant though with Hakuho clearly landing on top of Okinoumi. The only explanation I can find for the error is that he thought Hakuho stepped out, but he's clearly looking at it... So I don't know. A bad moment I guess..

From his angle of view, he probably saw a near simultaneous hit of Hakuho's left knee and Okinoumi's butt. He has to make an immediate call one way or another. No replay or side angle view allowed for him. Edited by Asojima

The last Makuuchi bout decided by yaguranage was in Nagoya 2009 between Harumafuji and Asashoryu:

I, as I am sure many did, watched Hakuho's reversal several times - one thing among many that struck me was that his heel almost touched outside the tamara/straw bales and he managed to re-place his foot to avoid this while being pushed back, and then executing that throw perfectly. It looked as if Hakuho was being overpowered in a way he rarely is and then he proved himself yet again.

Though I do agree that Aoiyama's technique (or lack of it) was his downfall, even the commentators watching that bout, specifically the ever loquacious Kotonishiki, were saying that luck is often a factor.

I like the timing, since just a few days ago some of were commenting how we like Gagamaru and now he does stuff like this.

I've said it before: I don't mind Hakuho winning because he keeps giving us these lessons in sumo. What presence of mind and control of body that kind of move takes. Just goes to show, Hakuho is never beaten until he is laying on the clay.

This is a magnificent basho. They've been good for a while, but this is really standing out.

Chiyotairyu is a mystery. How is his health status? On the first four days he lost after a few seconds and his last three bouts he won like a Yokozuna.

I am consistently mystified by how Chiyotairyu can go from so bad to so good from day to day. He clearly has the talent - a couple of years ago he was getting kinboshi and mixing it with the Sanyaku, now he is a Juryo-Makuuchi yo-yo rikishi. I wonder if it is physical (I know he has had diabetes issues in the past) or mental (lack of motivation, depression, something like that)? I know that when he wants to go he can go with the best of them and I hope he sorts himself out so he can use his talent to get to where he should be, somewhere around Sanyaku level

I've always gotten the impression that a a bunch of the guys from Kokonoe have some serious mental downfalls, but maybe that's based on anecdotal information. Kokonoe oyakata always seemed like he would be a really tough and demanding coach (or person in general).

Asasekiryu just showed up half and therefore just managed a

"half-ASAed" henka and lost to Toyohibiki ;-)

Good example that more to pull a good juicy sidestep.
