Rikishi on the way to the regional basho

Recommended Posts

This happens 3 time a year and I didn't have a proper thread to put that yet.

Rikishi makushita and below, oyakata, yobidashi and gyoji etc. go to the location of the regional basho the day before banzuke publication by the "sumo train" shinkansen. The young rikishi have to collect the packages with the new banzuke the next morning.

This time only about 200 are on the train. The higher ranks have always other means, all those at the long jungyo (till today) go from there directly, several heya have started their camps already earlier in the region.

Usually just unknown rikishi are on the train, but several of the new fans who are said to be the main support of the recent rise in sumo popularity, sumo girls (sujo) were at Tokyo station to see them off.

It's lonely already in Ryogoku - though enlivened by the sight of tourists trying to prise open the locked doors of the stables. I already chatted with two lots this morning and told them there's no free training to watch in Tokyo for the next five weeks.
