Sumo Museum exhibitions

Recommended Posts

The YouTube InternetMuseum channel shows a visit of the sumo museum (only there filming is not allowed) in the kokugikan with the present new exhibition "Sumo and the war, 70 years after WWII".
Also with enlargeable pics on their page: http://www.museum.or.jp/modules/topics/?action=view&id=728

The article above refers to the present new exhibition at the sumo museum. The exhibition changes every 2 months and so does the page on the NSK site: http://www.sumo.or.jp/sumo_museum/display/list
The Japanese full text is only available during the time of the exhibition, afterwards just the short overview remains: who can read it, should save the page in time.
The pictures though remain on site (for the last 2.5 years), with the same date as the small pic in the exhibition history respectively, no. 1 to 8 or up to14, in this format: www.sumo.or.jp/img/sumo_museum/151020_01.jpg

The next exhibition at the sumo museum from Feb 21st to Apr. 21st  will be about tegata 「手形 Rikishi’s palm print」

They in the past also carried the hope to promote health and to drive (tsuppari) away evil spirits.

At present an exhibition at the museum of Ehime history and culture about rikishi from the prefecture is under way. About 70 items are on display since Sept 30th till Nov. 26th.

Btw., if a rikishi takes on the name Asashio, it is Asashio Taro, like the first Asashio above (real first name Tarokichi), just like a Konishiki has to be a Yasokichi.

A Yutakayama is free to choose - the first Yutakayama had already changed his first name in the shikona

This exhibition is so popular, it is extended till June 24th (free entry after the basho) - and may get renewed for a third basho as well, Hakuho should have enough memorabilia - commemorative postcards are on sale at the entrance as well

Praying for that third basho extension and that Japan doesn't get boneheaded about the one COVID case in its limited tour group entries.

Chris has a walkthrough of the exhibition, including artifacts not shown in the above pictures like Hakuhō's sumo school notebooks, and memorabilia from Mongolia.

It's Kakuryuu's turn now- an exhibition of his career will be held at the KKan Sumo museum thru Aki basho. January and May featured Hakuhou, now this. Photos, mitsuzoroi (three piece keshomawashi worn during the Yokozuna dohyo iri by the Yokozuna and his two attendants), about 100 items to be on display. There will also be an Oyakata talk-show featuring ex-Hakuhou, Shibatayama, Kakuryuu himself and others. Details on the Kyokai Homepage (in English? Don't know..).

Kakuryu presented his exhibition today

For 100 years of NSK, an exhibition about yusho rikishi is going on ATM. The rikishi get small replicas of (some of?) the big trophies, not just of the emperor's cup. The sumo channel in a video shows the small and big version of the past PAN-AM cup

A version of the old Emperor's cup from 1926, for Orochiyama

to compare, the present one
