Akinomaki 31,716 Posted October 10, 2015 (edited) 25 years of the Kehaya-za sumo hall in Katsuragi-city, Nara prefecture.Taima-no-Kehaya was the one defeated and killed by a kick breaking his hipbone after a 7day fight to the death with Nomi-no-Sukune in the first recorded sumo bout, before the Tenno. Thus he is with Nomi-no-Sukune a "founder" of sumo. The hall is at the side of his tomb. There's an admission fee of 300Yen for adults, but apparently tourists from overseas, also for longer stay and exchange students can enter for free on showing their passport. From a peak of 6700 visitors a year in the 1992 season (April to March), the number dropped below 1500 in 2011. To counter this, in 2014 they started to have several events and other PR effective measures. They also have pamphlets in English and 4 other foreign languages now. In 2014 they had again 3200 visitors, this year the first half year up to September was 15% up compared to last year.In the hall they have an exhibition dohyo the size of one at a main basho and exhibit several of their 12 00 sumo items. From the 10th to the 12th they have the Kehaya-matsuri, where you can experience keiko with rikishi from Sadogatake-beya.http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASHB13V1THB1POMB004.htmlGoogle street-view access (you can nearly read the explanations to the exhibits)a banzuke from the Edo period, considered to be from November 1839a sekitori personal zabuton from Teraoa collection of magazines etc.a yokozuna kesho-mawashi set from Kitanoumi Edited February 26, 2016 by Akinomaki

Akinomaki 31,716 Posted November 29, 2015 25 years of the Kehaya-za sumo hall in Katsuragi-city, Nara prefecture. The hall has on exhibit the yokozuna kesho mawashi set Kitanoumi used for his first dohyo-iri. It shows in pics the popular traditional 3 Japanese quality grades ShoChikuBai, pine (better), bamboo and plum (lower). It reads Masuiyama-koenkai on the bottom, it was made for Kitanoumi's 1st Mihogaseki shisho, ex-ozeki Masuiyama I (the father) in 1949. It hadn't been used because Masuiyama didn't make it to yokozuna as expected. After his 2nd yusho (1st as ozeki) he failed to get kachi-koshi again because of injuries and soon retired. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/local/nara/news/20151126-OYTNT50273.html

Akinomaki 31,716 Posted January 28, 2016 a manzai performance on the 16th - with the 2 comedians in mawashi. On the 24th these 2 will present a reformed story of Taima-no-Kehaya: one where he won that bout with Nomi-no-Sukune. This event had one special happening: former governor of Osaka Ota on the (here not sacred) dohyo. As governor she had expressed the wish to present the Osaka governor's award at the Haru basho, but the NSK had refused to abolish the rule to prohibit women from stepping onto the (sacred) dohyo at a honbasho, or to grant an exception. It was a whole play about Taima-no-Kehaya, with Yoshimoto-kogyo comedians and locals performing. Ota in the final stage of the play entered the doyho as the (imaginary) riji-cho of the Ancient-Japan Sumo Federation. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/national/20160124-OYT1T50105.html interviewed on the dohyo

Akinomaki 31,716 Posted March 6, 2016 Nishiiwa's talk I only caught the end of but the former Wakanosato won't be starting a career as a toastmaster anytime soon. Maybe he ran out of arguments as he went to do sumo instead with another member of the panel discussion http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1610252.html

Akinomaki 31,716 Posted August 17, 2016 The 1st "Kehaya-za Comic Dojo" was held on the 14th. They had the play again: On 28.1.2016 at 14:07, Akinomaki said: a whole play about Taima-no-Kehaya, with Yoshimoto-kogyo comedians and locals performing. But comedians also did a kind of shokkiri show - the articles doesn't use the name and just says a sketch comedy as an explanation of forbidden moves, so it might be a bit different from the usual one. http://www.sankei.com/west/news/160815/wst1608150031-n1.html

Akinomaki 31,716 Posted December 1, 2018 A new use for the Kehaya-za sumo hall - and the opening of the dohyo for women? For tomorrow a dohyo wedding is scheduled there.
