British sumo fan in St. Louis; lived in Tokyo in mid-90s

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Started watching sumo in the mid 1980s in England. Highlights were shown on TV and I became hooked (Chiyonofuji and Konishki!)

My interest was further stoked when I lived in Tokyo between 1994-1996. I was on the JET program and taught at Gakushuin boys junior high and university (between Mejiro and Takadanobaba). During this days, I used to watch the last hour every day from 5pm to 6pm, and just hoped that Akebono, Musashimaru, Musoyama, or even Mainoumi could beat Takanohana.

After moving to America for twenty years, I lost contact with sumo until I went to a Japanese festival at the Missouri botanical gardens and saw some ex-juryo Hawaains wrestle. Since then, I have watched highlights almost on a daily basis thanks to Kintamayama and Jason. It's been great to see the rise of the Mongolians, but I am sorry not t have seen Asashoryu in his glory days.

Joined this forum to discuss sumo with their fans, and particularly anyone in the St. Louis area.

Otsukaresamadeshita!
