Rikishi Health Check

Recommended Posts

Not many pictures.

Kakuryu kept his ideal weight of 155 kg (342 lbs) at the health check event on August 26th. Said he was able to have good work-out during jungyo and was alright even if he didn't eat rice.

There's no surprise that heaviest rikishi would be Orora. He hit the scale at 279 kg (616 lbs), 5 kg (11 lbs) more than the last weigh-in. He complained that the scale was broken. Hmmm...

Aoiyama has finally passed the 200 kg mark, topped the scale at 201 kg (443 lbs). He looked confused and said yesterday morning he "only" weighed 194 kg (428 lbs). Like Orora, he was absolutely convinced that the scale was broken.

Wakanosato also participated in the event, dutifully showed up as he's still counted as active rikishi.

He lost 6.5 kg (14 lbs) from his usual 153 kg (337 lbs). He said his losing weight was connected to his mind.

Not in the picture was Kisenosato, who was 174 kg (384 lbs), gained 5 kg (11 lbs) from the last weigh-in. He only laughed, saying that the food during summer tour was delicious.

Sadanofuji currently is the heaviest rikishi at makuuchi at 208 kg (459 lbs), gained 8 kg (18 lbs) from the last weigh-in. The other heavy weights who held the last record Ichinojo who was the heaviest at 207 kg (456 lbs) and Gagamaru who was tipping the scale at 200 kg (441 lbs), were absent from the event.

Sadanofuji wryly said he didn't want to exceed Ichinojo, but gained more muscle mass instead (of fat).

Urutora still hasn't moved from 64 kg (141 lbs). He said he ate 3 cups of rice every meal time, but it was difficult to gain weight. His current goal is to reach 70 kg.

Orora is fast approaching Konishiki's highest recorded weight - 285kg.

I was first thinking that maybe the scales weren't calibrated correctly if absolutely everyone had gained weight, but if they were reading consistently high than that means Urutora would actually have lost weight, which seems incredibly unlikely. There might be a more complicated flaw in the scales, but that seems less likely.

I used to be jealous of people with Urutora's problem. Too bad I never got into pro sumo, I probably could have put on weight really easily.

If they're using the same scales for Orora and Urutora, these results are bound to be flawed anyway.

Hakuho looks as if he has just been injected with amazement.

Where did you see Hakuhō?

I think he's the first picture at the top with his eyes closed. At first I thought that was Kakuryu but clearly Kaku is wearing a different yukata in the second picture.
