egparis18 591 Posted August 9, 2016 Screenshots from a superb 6 minute animation by Laurène Braibant. You can watch the video free on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/90401182 An there's an interview with the artist here on Dosukoi http://www.dosukoi.fr/laurene-braibant-interview-sumo/
egparis18 591 Posted August 14, 2016 To compare and contrast with the animation above, an artistic video of keiko with familiar faces. Enjoy.
hamcornheinz 839 Posted August 14, 2016 (edited) I think the reason they train on an empty stomach is fairly obvious, and has nothing to do with body fat.. congrats to whoever did the video though. Well shot and well edited, although I do think the aspect ratio cropping is a bit extreme.... Edited August 14, 2016 by hamcornheinz

Well shot and well edited, although I do think the aspect ratio cropping is a bit extreme.... I see what you mean. It’s laid on with a trowell, and with the sepia and closeups and slo-mo on top. All art forms interlock and seep into each other though. We talk about movement in sculpture, colour in music and so on. Paintings and drawings are not luminous, but that never stopped anybody from describing them as exactly that. They’re flat and motionless, but artists have all kinds of techniques for giving them volume, depth, distance, modelling - living movement. An artist might even ‘slow down’ a picture - abstract or figurative - by putting a vertical ‘in front of’ a load of diagonals just like in cinematography. Getting to my point; it looks to me as though the video’s author decided to profit from the restrictions that painting is obliged to get around but cinematography isn't. Turn everything inside out. So you get to see Toyonoshima’s eyes as if you’re looking at him through a visor, or the other way around. Very close, very alert, but we’re really nowhere near him and he’s not in armour , but nearly naked and we might be in our pyjamas and he doesn’t know we’re looking at him. Art. What do you think of the music? Edited August 15, 2016 by egparis18
hamcornheinz 839 Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) 5 hours ago, egparis18 said: The music is great and works, but that's the problem with this type of cropping really. It sets a very specific type of movement and mood and you basically can keep it however long you can, but you really can't switch it up or change that much. That works into the music too. egparis18 591 Posted August 15, 2016 I just watched it with the music, then muted, then with the music again. It's a complex piece of music and not at all the sort I usually listen to. I tried to think what music I'd have chosen and just got crazy stuff like Peggy Lee singing Fever.
egparis18 591 Posted August 28, 2016 (edited) 28 08 2016 Chiyonofuji poem Sauntering in His shimmering Elegant satyr’s grin The way with him His muscles purred. Pat pat pat his toes Get their hold Forward he goes Throws The lid off the crowd’s Noise rejoices. 19 08 2016 Chiyonofuji haiku On the screen stitching And tucking the colours seem To seam him again A great curve of salt Scalding corners of my eyes Shouldn’t need to weep A sullen sorrow Huddled furtive at doorways Tugging at my sleeve PS. I know that 'purred' doesn't rhyme with 'shimmer', but Chiyonofuji's muscles didn't glimmer or simmer or even glitter or flicker. They purred. The kid stays in the picture. I know that 'voice' rhymes more neatly with 'rejoices' too, but it's too fey and precious. Edited August 28, 2016 by egparis18

egparis18 591 Posted October 30, 2016 (edited) First of all thank you to Akinomaki, who sent me to the page which took me to the pages.
