Kise already has fulfilled all expectations and looks much more impressive: this year's kitai-taishou May dolls, with PicoTaro and Yuzuru Hanyu

Kisenosato's dohyo-iri (with Takayasu) made of every day pottery - one piece at an exhibition of such sculptures (others of bamboo) at the Hosshou temple in Nanbu-town, Tottori. http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASK4765CYK47PUUB00F.html

Now there is a site that plays around with the animals of the scroll: http://www.chojugiga.com/

The designs for sumo are still close to the original ones: http://www.chojugiga.com/tag/相撲

some only slightly varied

but there are also new designs for other fighting styles

and even modern ones

Ancient style Yamato-Izumo dolls are said to have their roots in haniwa figures buried in ancient funeral mounds (kofun).

Standard forms are the rikishi, the dog and the left-above style kimono (for the dead) doll. Kazu Mizuno recreates them.
