egparis18 622 Posted June 29, 2015 Tochinoshin must have done something really bad to annoy the powers that be. This is not the first time he has been blatantly short-changed. I am very angry. Hulk angry. I am now as one with Tochinoshin. I will guide him metaphysically to Ozeki from here on. You're dead right. Are there only two slots each at komusube and sekiwake, and no room for another rikishi? Thank you for e-mailing the banzuke to me.
Benevolance 2,534 Posted June 29, 2015 Really hope that Terunofuji has a good debut. The bar has slipped rather low on that regard. The only ozeki currently wrestling like an ozeki is Kise, so really all Terunofuji need do is put together 10 wins and he's a superstar.

Akinomaki 41,858 Posted June 30, 2015 Terunofuji and Takarafuji on a NHK news video.News9 bilingual mix (download and switch from stereo to right or left) on YouTube with annoying CM skippedhttp://youtu.be/xZXt3UTDKEg?t=16s

Hulk angry. I am now as one with Tochinoshin. I will guide him metaphysically to Ozeki from here on. Well, at least he can take comfort from the fact that (as mentioned) he's the 3rd that stayed an M1 with a 9-6. The two others became Ozeki. Also, there were 4 others that got a 15-0 in Juryo. All became Ozeki. So seems like our veery own Hulk will not need to do too much to guide him to Ozeki, it is a historical imperative :)
sekitori 492 Posted June 30, 2015 (edited) Am I the only one rooting for Kyokutenho? I thought EVERYONE is rooting for Kyokutenho. If not, there are at least two of us who are. :-) Edited June 30, 2015 by sekitori
WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted July 1, 2015 Make that 4. He is a pioneer and many people cheer for him when he is on the dohyo.
kosomo 32 Posted July 1, 2015 Who's not rooting for Kyokutenho (and Aminishki while we're at it)? They are wily old veterans showing these young whipper snappers what's what. It's always my favorite fun fact to know that for some rikishi, Kyokutenho has been doing sumo longer than they've been alive :D

It's always my favorite fun fact to know that for some rikishi, Kyokutenho has been doing sumo longer than they've been alive :D Kyokutenho and Aminishiki are two of my favorites and I always root for them. They're like sumo's equivalents of the cool uncles who come around on Thanksgiving and can show you how to fix a motorcycle and throw a perfect spiral. CT3* 331 Posted July 1, 2015 I've cheered for Kyokutenho steadily. Used to be indifferent toward Aminishiki before become a fan. But for some reason, Tokitenku has irked my nerves consistently since about 2010. LOL!
orandashoho 720 Posted July 1, 2015 I am cheering for both and remember them from the time that I started watching sumo, when Eurosport showed a midnight digest. Now they are still there. I wish I had known about this site years ago and I would have been able to see Tenho win the yusho.
sekitori 492 Posted July 1, 2015 I am cheering for both and remember them from the time that I started watching sumo, when Eurosport showed a midnight digest. Now they are still there. I wish I had known about this site years ago and I would have been able to see Tenho win the yusho. You still can. It was the most satisfying bout I have ever seen. I'm a big Hakuho fan but for sheer drama, none of his yushos provided me with more pleasure than this one. For lack of a better name, I call it "Kyokutenho's Impossible Dream Yusho". If you've never seen the playoff before, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Naganoyama 6,043 Posted July 2, 2015 Tochinoshin must have done something really bad to annoy the powers that be. This is not the first time he has been blatantly short-changed. I am very angry. Hulk angry. I am now as one with Tochinoshin. I will guide him metaphysically to Ozeki from here on. You do realise that, given his lack of popularity with the banzuke committee, he's probably going to need three consecutive zensho yusho to make ozeki? And even then, they'll probably promote somebody else instead? And they'll demote him back to juryo for good measure? ;-)

Asashosakari 20,301 Posted July 8, 2015 Hmm, just noticed that Chiyoarashi dropped only 30 ranks (Ms2e->Ms32w) with his zero-win record, instead of the customary 35. I first thought that's something new for makushita high-rankers, but I see they did the same thing in the most recent case, back in 2007. (But not in other cases right before that in 2006, 2005 and 2004, so I guess they made a decision in 2007.)
Gurowake 4,154 Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) What they really need to do as well is drop the 0-win makushitans in the bottom third of the division more. There's barely any difference between 1 and 0 wins down there. Like maybe have 1-5: 30, 10-20: 35, 20-40: 40, 40-60: 45 to smooth into the 50-rank drop at the top of sandanme. As an illustration on the latest banzuke: Karatsuumi: 1-6 Ms46 -> Sd21 Kirinofuji: 0-7 Ms56 -> Sd31 Certainly some of that is the crowding out of the Sd20 area, and Tamadaiki ended up with his 1-6 being 4 ranks higher starting only 2 ranks higher, but it just shows how close the difference in movements between the two records is that a little crowding can make them virtually identical. Asashosakari 20,301 Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) As an illustration on the latest banzuke: Karatsuumi: 1-6 Ms46 -> Sd21 Kirinofuji: 0-7 Ms56 -> Sd31 It's partly also because the current committee is dropping almost all makushita makekoshi harder than before, especially 1-6's. They even had to drop the 0-7's and 0-0-7's on the last banzuke a bit harder than the usual 35/40 just to soften the very issue you're highlighting: Ms43e Katsunofuji 1-6 -> Sd22e (-39) Ms46w Komanokuni 1-6 -> Sd25e (-38.5) Ms49w Aomihama 1-6 -> Sd27w (-38) Ms36w Hitenryu 0-7 -> Sd14w (-38) Ms37e Tochinosato 0-0-7 -> Sd20w (-43.5) Ms50w Kaito 0-0-7 -> Sd34e (-43.5) Edited July 8, 2015 by Asashosakari
