With Okinoumi's impending intai, this is the first time in the modern era, and perhaps ever (although i didn't check that) that two top division rikishi (discounting yokozuna or current ozeki) of the same exact rank have retired in consecutive basho; Chiyotairyu at M12W with a 2-6 in Kyushu 2022, followed by Okinoumi at M12W with an 0-6 in Hatsu 2023. although there were also very close incidents of the same rank, but different sides.

It is also the first time (discounting retirements caused by scandal) since July 1991 that two current makuuchi rikishi have retired in consecutive tournaments (Chiyonofuji & Daijuyama in Natsu 1991, followed by Onokuni in Nagoya 1991)

In Oki's case, it was his one and only basho as a sekitori, which unfortunately makes him stand out a lot more.

You know what's very special about Atamifuji? He's the first sekitori (and makuuchi) who was born after the Sumo Forum first opened on Dec 8th 2001. I also read that the forum's been up for few weeks prior to its official opening.

Day 8 at 0-4, last in 2000.05
Day 9 at 0-4, last in 1988.01
Day 10 at 0-5 or 1-4, last in 2006.11 (before Chiyonoo)
Day 11 at 0-5 or 1-4, last in 2000.03

Day 12 at 0-6, 1-5 or 2-4, last in 2017.01
Day 13 at 0-6, 1-5 or 2-4, last in 2012.01

Day 10 and 9 are scheduled together for the lower ranks, the NSK posted day 10 on day 8 on the fan site. Chiyonoo was scheduled for both days, so yes.

The last three days ms and below are already posted on day 12.

They really don't have to decide this until they are making the Day 10 sekitori pairings, because generally anyone in Makushita that would get put into Juryo is fighting on the first day of each round.  It might be that they do decide then because it's customary in the lower divisions to know which day(s) you're fighting when the schedule comes out for each round.

Yeah, no, the fill-in rikishi for juryo are pretty clearly chosen separately each day, not in advance. Has nothing to do with the makushita and under scheduling, and the Fanclub site schedule preview obviously didn't include Chiyonoo's Day 10 juryo appearance either, the posted schedule stopped with the last makushita matchup as one would expect. No idea why Akinomaki is claiming differently. The whole idea breaks down on the fact that it's not actually possible to know for certain whether or not a fill-in will be needed on the "second" day since it changes depending on possible sekitori withdrawals on the "first" day.

Anyway, I guess they just saw no reason to not keep going down the ranks this time, regardless of Chiyonoo's MK.

Because it was way after midnight and I was half asleep, not on the PC and didn't check the facts. I just assumed because they schedule makushita&below 2(or 3) days in a pack, they also plan the higher bouts for them in advance.

Current Makuuchi rikishi who were in the same division ten years ago (Hatsu 2013): Tochinoshin, Takayasu, Aoiyama, Okinoumi (intai this basho), Tamawashi (natch), Takarafuji, and the highest-ranked at M1, Myogiryu.  Azamaryu was in his first Juryo basho , headed up to Makuuchi where would definitely get a KK really soon.

Not the answer for the above, but Azumaryu with 58 basho doubles the record of 29 by Akiseyama for most basho needed till first makuuchi kachikoshi after first makuuchi promotion, 10 years, on the 10th try. o

Takakeishō's yūshō puts an end to a 7 year streak of Hatsu basho hatsu yūshō winners that began with Kotoshōgiku in 2016.

Jokoryu came very close to do it from mae-zumo as he went 27-0 before losing the yusho decider from Ms15e.
