Hattorizakura really interests me. What on earth keeps him going at something he is obviously so bad at? I have watched videos of some of his matches when he looked almost paralysed with fear and literally fell over backwards before his opponent had a chance to lay a finger on him.

Why does he not just call it quits when he does not enjoy what he's doing?

Because he loves sumo.

Imagine you are a big sumo fan and actually have the chance to be part of it.

But does he really? Is this known for a fact? He looks more terrified than in love with the experience.

If you believe what the papers write and his mother says, it's a fact - but only he himself knows

Hattori's mother got interviewed: "I want you to know, he's not doing it on purpose."

"He told me after the bout: 'I never dreamed my body would react like that. Mom, I'm frustrated.'"

"This child is what's called an otaku who thoroughly checks the net and already in primary school had a stiff neck and shoulders from it. This time when he checked about Kinjo, he got from the net 'national juniors runner-up in arm wrestling' and a story, true or not, that another deshi lost a tooth in training with him. With that in mind he stepped onto the dohyo trembling in tremendous fear and says his body acted on its own."

"As a small child he was afraid to use the stilts he got, thinking: 'and what if the part I stand on gets detached?' But with all this extreme fear he wanted to go into sumo by all means and we supported him. He's very unathletic and always was competing for last at sprints in school, but he really loved sumo."

Hmmm, well I guess we have to accept that his mother knows what he's really thinking, and what he wants to do. Will the NSK keep him as a rikishi indefinitely even if he continues to lose all his bouts, or will there come a time when he requested to retire?

Thanks for the information Akinomaki.

That is tsuridashi. At that point our young whipper snappers is equivalent to a shinitai.

I don't know how these records would be kept, but Wakatomoharu-Takayoshitoshi had to break some kind of letters record in a bout.

12 vs 14? Nowhere near. ;-) As far as bouts covered by the DB go, the maximum appears to be 28 in 13 vs 15 and 14 vs 14 matchups.

Most of those shikona are the typical 3 kanji ones that just have long readings for each one, but Takachihonomine is 4 kanji + 1 kana.  I guess Chiyonofuji was like that too, but he really had 2 different 2-kanji combinations that occur quite a lot and each kanji is only one syllable.  I don't see anything common in Takachihonomine, and two of the kanji have 2-syllable readings.

One wonders which rikishi has (has had) the longest romaji name with the shortest number of kanji.

Kotohigashiyama is about as long as you can get with 3 kanji.  But Kagayaki probably has the highest ratio (8:1).

How I miss Takachihonomine:-(

I would have loved a Takachihonomine-U bout.

TIL there was a rikishi named U for a while. Too bad he changed, I would've loved to hear a gyoji yell his name before his bouts. Are there any other One letter / syllable rikishi out there?

For now Hattorizakura is a kind of celebrity and will be kept as long as he wants.

For the event of 70 losses in a row, he was featured in a Nikkan column today

201801200000199-w200_0.jpgo

He gained 8kg since Aki last year and is now at 83kg (19, 180cm) - he entered with 65kg Kyushu 2015.

Since age 7 he yearned for the sumo world. He came to Shikihide-beya alone once and was rejected, then came again with his mother and the oyakata accepted him: "I felt his enthusiasm. Now I tell him 'You're stronger now than that you 2 years ago' - because running away is the biggest way to lose."

He’s certainly got tons better. I’m actually surprised he’s kept losing as much as he has… he looks like he should start winning some soon.

That ship sailed quite a while ago - nobody had more than four consecutive zenpai records until Hattorizakura came along. For context, his stablemate Sawaisamu took about 25 years to collect his record 11 total zenpai results. Hattorizakura has done the same in just two years.

How about a very arrogant Yokozuna that's named I?

Tochinowaka the last one was called Ri for awhile.

Sometimes I actually do support and learn about rikishi for their names. Most recently Aqkua. Tobizaru the flying monkey was another but his technique is really good aswell. I still supported Aragyoshi when he was no longer U.

I didn't find the really efficient shikona in the database, especially: 一  Kazuhajime (1: start of counting) and い  Kanagashira (i: top of the old Japanese kana alphabet)
