Hattorizakura: 70 consecutive losses.... new record?

Hattorizakura really interests me. What on earth keeps him going at something he is obviously so bad at? I have watched videos of some of his matches when he looked almost paralysed with fear and literally fell over backwards before his opponent had a chance to lay a finger on him.

Why does he not just call it quits when he does not enjoy what he's doing?

Hmmm, well I guess we have to accept that his mother knows what he's really thinking, and what he wants to do. Will the NSK keep him as a rikishi indefinitely even if he continues to lose all his bouts, or will there come a time when he requested to retire?

That is tsuridashi. At that point our young whipper snappers is equivalent to a shinitai.

12 vs 14? Nowhere near.  As far as bouts covered by the DB go, the maximum appears to be 28 in 13 vs 15 and 14 vs 14 matchups.

One wonders which rikishi has (has had) the longest romaji name with the shortest number of kanji.

Most of those shikona are the typical 3 kanji ones that just have long readings for each one, but Takachihonomine is 4 kanji + 1 kana.  I guess Chiyonofuji was like that too, but he really had 2 different 2-kanji combinations that occur quite a lot and each kanji is only one syllable.  I don't see anything common in Takachihonomine, and two of the kanji have 2-syllable readings.

Kotohigashiyama is about as long as you can get with 3 kanji.  But Kagayaki probably has the highest ratio (8:1).

For now Hattorizakura is a kind of celebrity and will be kept as long as he wants.

For the event of 70 losses in a row, he was featured in a Nikkan column today

That ship sailed quite a while ago - nobody had more than four consecutive zenpai records until Hattorizakura came along. For context, his stablemate Sawaisamu took about 25 years to collect his record 11 total zenpai results. Hattorizakura has done the same in just two years.

Tochinowaka the last one was called Ri for awhile.

Sometimes I actually do support and learn about rikishi for their names. Most recently Aqkua. Tobizaru the flying monkey was another but his technique is really good aswell. I still supported Aragyoshi when he was no longer U.

I didn't find the really efficient shikona in the database, especially: 一  Kazuhajime (1: start of counting) and い  Kanagashira (i: top of the old Japanese kana alphabet)
