Natsu 2015 Basho Talk (spoiler alert!)

Recommended Posts

Oh god, I am feeling a Hakuhō loss and Terunofuji win tomorrow… I hope not.

If Terunofuji wins then I see like 1% less effort from Harumafuji, since Harumafuji will definitely be out of the picture.

Don't forget Terunofuji and Harumafuji are from the same heya. If Harumafuji's yusho chance is gone, I think he will want to help his kohai win it.

While they may theoretically be from the same heya, Terunofuji is not originally from Isegahama, and I recall he is in the last-resort slot in terms of being an attendant for Harumfuji's dohyo-iri. That says to me that they are not truly integrated and merely are forced to tolerate each other.

I'm kind of getting the impression that Harumafuji, Aminishiki, etc from Isegahama are doing a bit more than just "tolerat[ing] each other". For example, last tournamentTerunofuji was wearing Aminishiki's kimono for good luck while waiting for a potential playoff against Hakuho and before this tournament it seemed to me that Terunofuji's more senior stablemates were putting a lot of time and effort into helping Terunofuji train. Sometimes I like to imagine what Ichinojo would look like with similar training efforts, considering both youngsters are built like oak trees.

Yes, actually the reason he's not an attendant for Haruma's dohyo-iri is pretty interesting. When Terunofuji overtook Takarafuji on the banzuke he was really excited to become an attendant, but it was the oyakata who refused. "If you want to be in a yokozuna dohyo-iri so bad, become a yokozuna" is the oyakata's unspoken tough-love message.

Jakusotsu & Doitsuyama - Just out of curiosity, what's the status of your Tochinoshin steak bet? :-)

Good question, I was wondering about this myself just today... I'm (wishfully?) thinking any sanyaku appearance of Tochinoshin settles it for me, but maybe Jakusotsu has some objections which we'll have to discuss when I'm in Nürnberg. ;-)
Yup, the steak's on me. And KK next basho would even give you some trimmings B-)

Honestly guys, does here anybody really believes that both Hakuho and Terrornofuji will lose tomorrow? Really? Never!

Terrornofuji will "surprisingly" losing to Aoiyama (with slipiotoshi) and Hakuho will win as expected. That's the script for the last day.

So Hakuho will get his 36th yushos as fast as possible (he quits immediately after his 36th) and Terrornofuji is still on his ozeki-run. In two bashos we can have one yokozuna less, but one ozeki plus (and maybe also one ozeki less with Kotoshogiku going sekiwake or intai).

It is going to be Hakuho's 35th yusho though, there was no yusho awarded in March 2011 tournament.

And why are people saying that he only needs to win 9 in Nagoya? Would they actually promote anyone off a most recent 9-win basho? Especially given his schedule, that would mean a lot of stupid losses.

Yeah, not sure where that has suddenly come from. Nobody's getting promoted to ozeki off of 9 wins in the final basho, and even 10 would probably cause some cross looks.

Then again, if it was only wins that mattered, surely 13/12/8 should be sufficient... (Whistling...)

Harumafuji as the flag bearer in the car with Terunofuji.

Hilarious or inappropriate?

(I thought it would be Takarafuji)

People are too hung up on both 33 and 3. Try 24 and 2 for an alternative view.

As for only two sanyaku appearances: Yutakayama. And there's also Kitanoumi's promotion that happened off K 8-7 -> S 10-5 -> S 14-1Y, which were his sanyaku appearances 2, 3 and 4. The first one was a 4-11.

The query doesn't exactly support the point, since the most recent example of 24-2 without 33-3, Hoshi in 1986, was not promoted. Also Yutakayama did begin his O-run from M2, but also had a previous appearance at Komosubi, so a total of 3 sanyaku appearances before promotion.

But I'm with you on Terunofuji promotion. I think kachikoshi in the first appearance in joi is impressive, and over the last two basho he shares the top record with Hakuho. Well deserved.

Is Terunofuji the first rikishi born in the Heisei-era to win a Yusho?

The answer to this question is yes.

I am happy to see that things were shaken up quite a bit this basho and it was not a runaway Hakuho yusho. The commentators on NHK were really throwing the question out there of whether this is a changing of the guard as far as Hakuho is concerned. Apparently he has not been getting enough keiko in. Kitanofuji also noted that the Japanese rikishi still need to step up their game, since the streak going back to Tochiazuma`s yusho in January 2006 continues for the Japanese rikishi yusho winner drought. Still, great performance by Terunofuji, I look forward to see how he will do as an ozeki.

While there is certainly no need for Hakuho to win another match for his legacy, he's not that old and I hope he will respond to the challenge and give us a couple of years of real competition at the top.

Can you consider doing this as a full time job? I guess the koenkai from Endo would be highly interested in a joint venture with you (and I think they will also paying very well).

LOL... The NSK would probably contribute as well.
