Kise baby!

Well, every now and then Kise gets some breadcrumbs, but this loss was dedicated to Kise but for Terunofuji.

This loss was dedicated to Hakuho losing.

You're right. Hakuho let Kisenosato win to help Terunofuji. LOL

So what would happen if Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kisenosato, Terunofuji, Takayasu, Kaisei and Ikioi all end up with 11-4?

Ikioi and Kaisei will not sleep well tonight. If they'd only squeak out a win today......

Just shows that Kisenosato has and still can defeat Yokozuna as a proper Ozeki should. Kisenosato has just made this honbasho interesting no doubt!

A fantastic extra kettei-sen tournament... \o/ :-D

BTW: Yoshikaze could also join this crowd. Uhh.

This basho is absolutely MENTAL. Some guys really put up their best to keep us entertained. Huge TV audience in perspective for NHK and UBS. That's were you find yourself hoping that no earthquake will strike Japan.

So what's tomorrow's menu?

I think they'd have to give it to him if he won two yusho's in a row somehow, or else I know I'd be filing a complaint if I were him.

Yokozuna Deliberation Council is in charge for the promotion. Note - council. They can promote whoever they wish.

Is that really so? So far I have had the impression that the NSK has to propose a rikishi for promotion. When Kaio had a Yusho followed by a 12-3 jun-yusho the rijicho said they are not going to put him up for discussion and I do not remember reading anything about it later on.

You are absolutely right and Andreas is wrong. The YDC is a collection of muppets to make (oftentime dumb) statements, but it's really only the NSK who decides about promotions.

It will be the end of sumo as we know it.

Well, there actually was the 11-4 kettei-sen in Kyushu 1996, so it's not entirely unprecedented.

So, is everyone else also hoping that Hak and Teronofuji lose and the rest win their regulation bouts tomorrow, just so we can see the spectacle that will be the play-offs?

Seriously though, how would the playoff run if they ended up with eight guys on 11 wins?

At least Kise has put some pressure in the yusho race and has a long shot to get into a playoff. Hak was pretty reckless driving forward without tying up both of Kise's arms or grabbing his mawashi. Would like to see a megaplayoff but would be fine with just Hak/Fuji which seems more likely. Would be disappointed with just an outright winner.

Split the Yokozunas and do a straight knockout format like the four players playoff?

Actually, I a hoping that Harumafuji upsets Hakuho and Terunofuji wins.

It will make the YDC deliberations and NSK nomination more agonizing (since Terunofuji yusho-Ed, but with a 12-3 record.

Honestly guys, does here anybody really believes that both Hakuho and Terrornofuji will lose tomorrow? Really? Never!

Terrornofuji will "surprisingly" losing to Aoiyama (with slipiotoshi) and Hakuho will win as expected. That's the script for the last day.

So Hakuho will get his 36th yushos as fast as possible (he quits immediately after his 36th) and Terrornofuji is still on his ozeki-run. In two bashos we can have one yokozuna less, but one ozeki plus (and maybe also one ozeki less with Kotoshogiku going sekiwake or intai).

Straight three-round single KO bracket.

Out of curiosity, would the bracket in this situation be seeded by rank? Or some sort of draw?

Fully random, as far as I know.

FWIW, the YDC isn't involved in ozeki promotions. I think the Kyokai would promote him with a 12-3 yusho (no matter if outright or via playoff), but not with anything else.

I know it's highly unlikely to happen, but just out of interest, what are the rules for setting up mega-playoffs with five, six or seven participants? I mean, obviously, two, four and eight are easy to schedule, and there are lots of precedents for three, but what happens in the case of five, six and seven? This must have happened in some of the lower divisions, at the very least.

They draw straws to determine initial bouts. If there's an odd number of competitors, one gets a bye. Whoever loses is out. Repeat until there are 2 or 3 rikishi remaining. I assume that anyone who gets a bye does not get a bye in any later round, but I'm not about to look through all the playoffs ever held to try to falsify that statement; maybe someone else knows. If there's 3 left after that, they keep fighting each other in a cycle until someone wins 2 in a row. If there's only 2, I think you know what happens.

The largest playoff I found was 12 in Jonidan in Kyushu '73, although only the results of the final 3-way playoff are in the data base.

If I had to bet on either Hakuho or Terunofuji losing, I'd go with Hakuho since Terunofuji is 3-0 against Aoiyama.

If Terunofuji wins then I see like 1% less effort from Harumafuji, since Harumafuji will definitely be out of the picture.

I wonder what this basho would have looked like had Kakuryu not been injured. I doubt it would have been so close since he likely would have gotten 10+ wins.
