The Best and Worst Yokozuna

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this deserves discussion in this thread or simply in a separate thread praising Harumafuji, but I feel that, while maybe not one of the BEST Yokozuna of all time numbers-wise and of course not as mind-blowingly dominant as Hakuho, he has one of the most dynamic and technically interesting styles of any Yokozuna. The match that illustrates this first in my mind was his match against Hakuho last year that helped get Terunofuji his yusho. The way he changed levels, pushed off the tawara, and shot in on Hakuho's belt was like something out of olympic freestyle wrestling. Then again, being a Yokozuna in the age of Youtube, there's just more video evidence, and I cannot say I'm basing this on extensive and unbiased research.

I'm with Simon on the Who-cares? boat, but Re:Onokuni: I actually rate him for staying in the basho where he finished 7-8 as a Yokozuna. I don't see the honor in the usual I'm-shit-so-I'll-push-the-kyujo-button routine.

Does-that-make-sense?

[And a guy with Asashoryu's charisma and presence is excused from the general rank dignity standards, IMHO.]

After that make-koshi Onokuni did offer to retire immediately but Futagoyama Rijicho refused him but urged him to work harder.
