Shitamachi 21 Posted March 14, 2015 The English language NHK announcers had it right today (sorry, don't know their names): "Brace yourself, Aminishiki is coming." Say my name!Nishinoshima You're goddam right. Correction: Nishinoshima had it right today! Great commentary as always.
Tenshinhan 1,599 Posted March 14, 2015 And Terunofuji is the first sanyaku-debutant to start with a 4-0 record since Takanonami in May 1993. How about 5-0? :-) And how about 7-0? Last shin sanyaku with a 7-0 start was Itsutsushima in May 1940. :-)
rhyen 1,809 Posted March 14, 2015 Hakuho faces Toyonoshima on Day 8. This seems odd, as he is the 16th highest ranked active rikishi that Hakuho could face when he'd normally face the top 15 only. I'm guessing it's due to a combination of Takekaze and Aoiyama doing very poorly despite facing few few upper sanyaku, and Toyonoshima doing quite well. It still seems odd to see the top ranked guy jump over multiple rikishi to the point of going beyond the normal limit well before his maegashira matches are done. They could have have Kisenosato, Harumafuji, or Goeido face Toyonoshima and be more in line with tradition as they all have Toyonoshima in their top 15 due to members of their heya in the joi, so I'm wondering if it's more of the first factor; typically you see the tail end of the joi pick up a decent number of wins before having to face the top rikishi, but the two mentioned are doing quite poorly. If that line of thinking goes, he should get Aminishiki on Day 9.
Tenshinhan 1,599 Posted March 14, 2015 Ms1w Kawabata is now at 4-0, so he will be promoted to Juryo for sure and give his debut as a sekitori in May.
ALAKTORN 346 Posted March 14, 2015 (edited) Chiyoōtori and Harumafuji’s balance are always very impressive. Kyokutenhō tried his all for once, but he couldn’t grasp the belt. Terunofuji outpowered Tochinoshin. Damn. The kid’s going far. Aminishiki doing great… Edited March 14, 2015 by ALAKTORN
Mongolith 51 Posted March 14, 2015 Great power bout between Shin and Fuji. Fuji is just a beast. Hak might as well skip the 1st week as he is just too good. Playing handbags one day just for the heck of it and tossing down guys with one hand the next. Seems about the only way to get him out of his rhythm is to use slip and slide clay.
dingo 1,162 Posted March 14, 2015 Goeido showed today that there actually is some real stuff in him. Not everyone can finish Ichinojo off at the tawara. And Harumafuji was incredibly lucky. I almost thought he lost the bout.
Jakusotsu 5,822 Posted March 14, 2015 And Harumafuji was incredibly lucky. I almost thought he lost the bout.Same with Kotoshogiku who would have warranted at least a mono-ii.
ALAKTORN 346 Posted March 14, 2015 (edited) And Harumafuji was incredibly lucky. I almost thought he lost the bout.Na. When Harumafuji was about to touch down, Takekaze was already out. Even if he had touched down he’d have still won. Edit: nvm his balance saved him. Edited March 14, 2015 by ALAKTORN
808morgan 805 Posted March 14, 2015 Take it easy Ama, Kaze was not going to be too much trouble this basho! Don't run off the dohyo!

Highway 46 Posted March 14, 2015 Man, Aoiyama is just not competing this basho. :/ But I'm glad Goeido is doing good at home. Hakuho seems unstoppable as ever. Interesting what Terunofuji is doing, but I doubt he will measure up against the higher ranked guys. Ichi and Kotosho are providing some pretty entertaining bouts though, like watching these two. ScreechingOwl 343 Posted March 15, 2015 Goeido follows up two stupid and careless losses against rikishi he should own with a very well planned and executed win against someone better than him -- amazing. It's nice to see Aminishiki at 36 (and hobbled by two decades of sumo) have a first week like this. Terunofuji is likely to have a lot of first weeks like this, as he and Ichinojo are in a contest for who makes ozeki first, and if either will make it this year. Hakuho has been unusually ferocious in his recent wins. Barring injury, he should be able to pretty much sleepwalk to the yusho now.
lackmaker 432 Posted March 15, 2015 Things are moving towards an interesting battle for the second sekiwake slot.Myogiryu,Ichinojo,Tochiozan but it cant be Aminishiki can it?
Asameshimae 220 Posted March 15, 2015 So Terunofuji's streak is over. When Terunofuji lost to Kisenosato, a few seconds afterwards, the commentator *Kitanofuji said: "Yep, the banzuke still has relevance." * (this guy is hard not to like besides the fact that he is 72 and looks 55)
Mongolith 51 Posted March 15, 2015 (edited) Shin read that not-a henka like an open book. Third day in a row using that trick that he seemed fully ready for it. Quick halt to his forward momentum before reengaging. I usually don't mind the not-a henka much but he has been overdoing it this basho. Well the question now is Zensho or no? Maybe he is is giving Futa's record another go a little bit earlier than expected. - Ichi (Did show some good balance again) and Fuji (Maybe stumbled/tripped up a bit) looked terrible today but meh they have done pretty well this basho and hope Ichi rejoins at K/S - Osu seems to be finally weaned off his forearm and looking much better with his mummy pads off. - Glad Goeido got his ass kicked with his lame ass tachiai & pull. Don't think much of him as an Ozeki but at least he usually gives an honest charge. Edited March 15, 2015 by Mongolith
Morty 1,480 Posted March 15, 2015 In Australia we would describe what Goeido does every second day as a "brain explosion". Yesterday he deals brilliantly with the young up and coming monster Ichinojo, but the day before he dances around and today he just doesn't seem to have a plan. He seems to have an inability to get his mind and body in synch and clearly either doesn't have a plan, or has a plan that sucks and leave him completely exposed to the talents of his opponent. To paraphrase a nursery rhyme, "when he is good he is very very good, but when he is bad he is horrid". He has so much obvious talent but like Kise he seems to let thinking get in the way of his ability to use it well. Which is a shame because I like him a lot
Kishinoyama 582 Posted March 15, 2015 (edited) Now that the tournament is at the midpoint, I certainly would not have predicted that Kotoshogiku would have the best record of the three Ozeki. Having a better record than Goeido at this point in the tournament is not surprising but having a better record than Kisenosato is a surprise. Setonaikai 8 Posted March 15, 2015 TOCHINOSHIN gave Ama a good lesson indeed: it is risky to rely on one winning technique. Tokitenkuu gave up his signature kicks and even Oosu seemed to have moved on from his kachi-age. Kisenosato saved his honour against Terunofuji. But I am quite confident with the fact that the youngster will put one of his fellow ozeki down in the next couple of days.
Itachiyama 108 Posted March 15, 2015 Harumafuji's seems to have injured his right elbow in yeasterdays bout against Takekaze sustainably. In today's bout he tried to avoid using his right. Maybe we will have another Yokozuna going kyujo ...
ALAKTORN 346 Posted March 15, 2015 I’m loving all these staying-apart matches. I mean such as Hakuhō’s today. He took a second staying away from Toyonoshima, and then charged in with a nodowa. It looks like Hakuhō is very intelligent at them, but Gōeidō lost his.
Senkoho 552 Posted March 15, 2015 Tokitenkuu gave up his signature kicks and even Oosu seemed to have moved on from his kachi-age. Not really, he tried to ketagurize Chiyootori yesterday ;-)
kuroimori 1,634 Posted March 15, 2015 Tokitenkuu gave up his signature kicks and even Oosu seemed to have moved on from his kachi-age. Not really, he tried to ketagurize Chiyootori yesterday ;-) But is isn't Tokitenku but Arawashi who is kicking off to go a good start in the ketaguri category this basho.
