Asashosakari 20,297 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Shukun-sho: not awarded Kanto-sho: Takarafuji (if KK), winner of Terunofuji-Tamawashi Gino-sho: not awarded Terunofuji's first sansho. Edited January 25, 2015 by Asashosakari
Asashosakari 20,297 Posted January 25, 2015 Unusual proceedings at the sansho voting this time...the initial round of balloting among the 19 members present was as follows (all contingent on winning their final bout): Takarafuji kanto-sho: 10 votes - passed Terunofuji kanto-sho: 4 votes - failed Tamawashi kanto-sho: 2 votes - failed Takarafuji shukun-sho: 8 votes - failed gino-sho - no proposals The meeting was going to be called at this point - however, NHK's Fujii, who chaired the meeting, pointed out that a Takarafuji loss could result in the first-ever zero sansho tournament. Eventually they settled on a re-vote on Terunofuji and Tamawashi (apparently now as a package deal), which narrowly passed with 10 members in favour.
Randomitsuki 2,912 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) It's surprising that Tokushoryu wasn't considered. As a run-of-the mill Makuuchi rikishi (28 years, career high at M7) he took the jun-yusho, probably the best basho of his life. Any explanation for that? I thought that an 11-4 for a middle-of-the roader will almost ensure a sansho. Edited January 25, 2015 by Randomitsuki
Tenshinhan 1,612 Posted January 25, 2015 And the Gino Sho should go to Tokitenku for using these rare techniques (but probably this is not a criterion).
ryafuji 825 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) I think Tokoshoryu was unlucky to miss out. Have to agree on Tokitenku too - love those leg kicks! Edited January 25, 2015 by ryafuji
ALAKTORN 346 Posted January 25, 2015 Yeah, I agree on both. Weird. They weren’t even nominated.
Gurowake 4,154 Posted January 25, 2015 I would have expected at least one of Takarafuji or Tochiozan to be considered for the Shukun-sho dependent on winning their last match for the KK. It feels weird that more people wanted to give Takarafuji the Kanto-sho. And no consideration for Tokushoryu is very very odd.
Andreas21 221 Posted January 30, 2015 very odd indeed. ... as had been the sansho decisions on many occasions the funny thing was that Terunofuji's first nomination badly failed, and just on the argument that they should give it to at least anybody changed their mind so much to the objectivity of the criteria Tokushoryu not part of the Yusho race is not honoured, sad but consistent with the past. But odd as well, why is a good start so much better than a good finish? Odd also that the Kinboshi also plays such a big role for the Sansho. This way, it is doubly rewarded. Of course it doesn't matter if the sole Yokozuna Hakuho mostly iterating Zensho Yushos or three are there to prey upon.
