Towanoyama intai

Recommended Posts

The veteran fans will remember Towanoyama (1.90 meters, 200 kilos, 37) for making it to Makuuchi for one basho where he never had a single bout as he was injured in morning training on day 1 of the 2002 March tournament and never made it back.. He retires at Makushita 50. "I really wanted to make it back to Makuuchi but my body never let me..I did all I could, so no regrets.." he said today.

He will not be staying on in the sumo world, and his danpatsushiki will be on January 25th (tomorrow) somewhere in Tokyo.

Sad news , I followed him every basho all these years , hoping he could be back in Juryo.

I wish him the best for his future life.

Amazing that he held out this long after dropping from makunouchi and juryo, quite an effort! How unique is it for a maegashira to never have competed in makunouchi (other than visting from juryo of course)?

At least he made it to the top 10 of Makushita appearances.

75+ Makushita appearances

1. 120 - Tochitenko (1982-2011)

2. 114 - Makimoto (1960-1982)

3. 102 - Kotokanyu (1981-2006)

4. 94 - Kimenryu (1985-2010) without ever reaching Juryo

5. 91 - Toyonokuni (1995-2013)

6. 86 - Tochinoyama (1995-2013) without ever reaching Juryo

7. 85 - Aiuchi (1955-1973)

7. 85 - Towanoyama (1993-..., 1-3 at Ms50)

9. 84 - Dairaido (1996-..., 1-3 at Ms28)

9. 84 - Edonami (1963-1981) without ever reaching Juryo

One Ms rikishi less to keep an eye on each and every basho. :-(

Sad news indeed. I also followed his post-sekitori career, hoping he would get back up.
