chishafuwaku 476 Posted January 14, 2015 (edited) Basically, the standard deviation gives us a measure to see if the input values are more concentrated or more dispersed. A low standard deviation indicates that the data tend to be very close to the mean. A high standard deviation indicates that the data are spread out over a large range of values. How it works: calculate the mean calculate the difference of each input from the mean calculate the square of previous results sum the previous results divide by number of cases - 1 take the square root Example (your case) 13 13 8 some values are approximate Mean = 11,33333 13-11,33333=1,66667 13-11,33333=1,66667 8-11,33333=-3,33333 1,66667*1,66667=2,77778 1,66667*1,66667=2,77778 (-3,33333)*(-3,33333)=11,111 2,77778 + 2,77778 + 11,111 = 16,66667 16,66667/2=8,33333 square root of 8,33333=2,887 Mmikasazuma has 0 as a result because has 11 11 11 as inputs So, have no deviation from the average 11 I hope it was clarified your question The purpose of this measure is to encourage a greater variability of the inputs. chishafuwaku Edited January 14, 2015 by chishafuwaku
