Sumozumo 240 Posted November 22, 2014 Ichinojo did a good job, but Tochinoshin very nearly had him completely picked up and moving him out of the dohyo. That was also really impressive. It was a good bout.
Vikanohara 171 Posted November 22, 2014 Tochinoshin-Ichinojo was interesting to anticipate (and predict), to watch as well as to analyse. My initial thought was "Ichinojo must have grown since their last meeting, having been close to a Yusho and after experiences with the best in town" but then I thought "the Georgian knows how to beat him, is on a stroll and his refreshed continuing mood might eventually nail it". Well, it turned out different, but it sure will be interesting to see what will happen next time around, as I expect them to be regular opponents for a while to come. sekihiryu 51 Posted November 22, 2014 I am disliking Osunaarashi more and more, his forearm/elbow to the face is still there despite him being warned about doing it so often and aggressively. I guess he is desperate right now, but he's dicing with breaking someones jaw, or knocking someone out. Takekaze took his medicine today, he's a tough cookie, but that blow at the tachiai was the beginning of the end. I really wish Asashoryu was still about and give him a nice slap to chops as a wake up call. Bring him down a peg or too. Knock the swagger out of his step. Osunarashi needs some of his own dished back to him, one of these would do the trick

sajmae 0 Posted November 22, 2014 So, when was the last time two Ozekis went kadoban with "real" makekoshis? If my search skills are correct, then it is Kyushu 1993 O2eHD Konishiki 6-9 and O1e Takanohana 7-8.

shumitto 402 Posted November 22, 2014 So, when was the last time two Ozekis went kadoban with "real" makekoshis? I've found four occurrences where two Ozeki went "real" makekoshi and in the last three one was demoted. Only in 03.1967 did they both manage to keep their ranks (there were also three Ozeki at the time and three Yokozuna, with Haridashi and all) but the rules were different back then. Yutakayama followed that makekoshi with another one and still managed to retain his rank, so he was not technically kadoban. He could do better sumo - right now he seems a street brawler, not nice to watch, bad sumo and a danger to the other rikishi.
Shitamachi 21 Posted November 22, 2014 (edited) Kyokutenhō said he wanted to get double digit wins, but he’s gonna have to win both of his last matches for that, now. :( It's still possible! But I agree with everyone's comments on his lack of ganbarization. I was curious, so I went through the DB. Kyokutenho is career (juryo/makuuchi) 59-62 in bashos AFTER he got his KK and the last time he did better than 50% was when he won his yusho... I made some kind of neat formulae to see how his record was on the days after making KK and this was the result. Might be interesting to compare to other rikishi. Yubinhaad 10,043 Posted November 22, 2014 Wakanosato made his 1,630th career appearance today, tying for sixth place with Aobajo on the career appearance list. He'll pass him tomorrow, of course. Kyokutenho would need to keep going until Day 7 (assuming no kyujo in the meantime) of next year's Kyushu basho to break Oshio's record of 1,891. If he can make it that far and be in Makuuchi for that basho he'll be the oldest rikishi in the modern era to do so, surpassing Fujinosato whose final Makuuchi bout came at the age of 41 years, 1 month and 8 days.

Akinomaki 31,396 Posted November 23, 2014 (edited) Kitanoumi had declared that Hakuho won't be given the special ichi-dai toshiyori status as long as he doesn't take on the Japanese citizenship. This Sankei column article demands that he should be made the first foreigner toshiyori when he retires, maybe voices like this will become louder, especially if he surpasses Taiho in yusho numbers next year. Akinomaki 31,396 Posted November 23, 2014 (edited) I didn't get to watch the second half of the yusho interview, I hope it turns up on the net later. He spoke quite a while in Mongolian and got quite a decent applause for that - I can't imagine that that many people who understood it were in the hall. He mentioned that he held the cup 32 times, but the one special basho he had just the flag for the yusho (I guess his name is not on the cup for that either) - so this record he still has to pull even with. Morty 1,352 Posted November 23, 2014 That was a really fabulous basho, enjoyed almost every minute of it, some great genki sumo, and some really interesting permutations for the next basho in January - two kadoban Ozeki, Hakuho going for the all time Yusho lead, Kakaryu clearly getting into the Yokozuna spirit and a couple of strong Sekiwake performances that could lead to Ozeki runs in the first half of next year. Excellent stuff!

Hakusho surely knows that he has to have a japanese citizenship to be an oyakata after his retirement from active sumo. So, when he didn't applied for one until now, I conclude, that he doesn't plan to stay.

Where did you get the "independent" part from what I said? Obviously his two paths are to become Japanese and stay in Japan as an oyakata, or to go live back home and do something else there.
