Pick The Yusho Winners Kyushu 2014

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Until further notice, the game will run just as it has the last several times. I will compile the results and post them as best as I can on this thread.

This is a pre-basho game where each player selects a rikishi from each of 8 sections of the banzuke. The player earns points for each win, each kachikoshi, and each yusho earned by their team of 8 rikishi. The sections of the banzuke are these:

Sanyaku (Y through K)

Maegashira

Juryo

Upper Makushita (Ms1-15 )

Lower Makushita (Ms16-60 plus tsukedashi if any)

Sandanme

Jonidan

Jonokuchi

That's it! Simple to understand, difficult to master. The hallmarks of any engaging game.

Please send your 8 selections to me before the beginning of action on Shonichi.

Itachi: nmatsuo@shaw.ca or by pm here at the forum

As a reminder, I am only a temporary caretaker of this game until Oshirokita can address the reconstruction of his system. All banzuke, website, and records updates will be on hold until then but the game itself and results postings will continue here on this thread.

Good luck with your picks.

Don't forget to check the kyujo list and email any replacements that may become necessary!

Hope I can still enter here as well, with this lineup :

Hakuho

Myogiryu

Hidenoumi

Abiko

Shodai

Hamaguchi

Ryuden

Sato

Been experiencing internet drops all night long already. First day I'm using my new laptop, so perhaps some setting problem ? The choices at the bottom are pretty obvious anyway.

Vikanohara's entry got to me just as I logged in to post the list of participants!

Including the 2 drones, there are 15 players for this tournament (assuming I don't have another entry arriving in my inbox as I type this).

Apart from Toonoryu, who's entry was posted also here, these are in order of entry.

Toonoryu

Itachi

Mukashi (I make my picks before identifying the drone's forced picks)

Jejima

Profomisakari

Chishafuwaku

Holleshoryu

Torafujii

Gurowake

Flohru

Kuroimori

Oshirokita

Achiyama

Genzai (Vikanohara's picks didn't change anything for this drone)

Vikanohara

I have never seen a smaller number of different rikishi selected in this game. There was very little deviation from Genzai's lineup.

Despite this, there weren't any unanimous picks.

Here is the breakdown by group for the 14 entries (not counting Genzai):

group: # of different rikishi selected/# who chose most popular-# who chose next most-# who chose next most ...

Upper Makuuchi : 2 rikishi/13-1

Lower Makuuchi : 3 rikishi/8-5-1

Juryo : 4 rikishi/9-2-2-1

Upper Makushita: 2 rikishi/13-1

Lower Makushita: 4 rikishi/6-5-2-1

Sandanme : 4 rikishi/10-2-1-1

Jonidan : 3 rikishi/10-3-1

Jonokuchi : 2 rikishi/13-1

I'm actually a little surprised that only one player has the same team as Genzai. (it's Torafujii)

I'm also surprised to not find any other pair of players with identical teams - maybe I'm wrong? I'll post the dohyo-iri with the results tomorrow and you can all look for yourselves.

We had anticipated a new player but it sounds like they've run out of time and plan to join in January.

If they send an untainted (no rikishi with results) entry to me in time, they may still make their debut.

Thanks for joining the tournament everyone!

I'm sorry I missed the deadline. It's really a shame as I had all my games noted on paper ready to enter, had been making decisions in the few minutes between classes... But yesterday my pocket wifi went out and my iPhone was being updated for 16 hours so no Internet... Totally bummed!

Toonoryu, I'm sorry I didn't log on earlier to tell you that Homasho would be absent this basho! :(

Due to the surprise (to most) kyujo of popular Juryo choice Homasho, I have received two last minute requests for replacements.

I've verified that these requests were early enough so that the replacements did not have results yet, thus meeting the stated deadline criteria.

I will be meeting with Oshirokita today to further discuss the matter. Until then, I'll present the lineups with the last minute changes for Toonoryu and Achiyama.

The full teams and Day 1 results and standings can be seen in the tables posted above.

Any picks that start the basho kyujo, including rikishi with a fusen loss in their first match, are automatically replaced by the default drone pick. In the case of Homasho, he will be replaced by the Juryo rikishi with the most wins last basho (if tied, then the highest ranked of those tied) = J2w Chiyoo.

This has occurred several times in the past. It is also not optional, so you cannot keep a pick even if he will return later in the basho.

Ok, Oshirokita has indicated the required treatment for Homasho and accordingly many players now have Chiyoo. This includes the drone Genzai which is odd since no one intentionally selected Chiyoo.

The tables are updated for Day 2 with this change included.

I didn't want to list the drone ahead of you so I switched your names.

I thought you two had the same team. Oops!

I see now that it is Torafujii and Genzai who have the same team, not you and Mukashi.

It will be presented properly on the Day 12 results.

(in reply to Toonoryu's query below)

Why do i suddenly have Hidenoumi instead of Tosayutaka in juryo ? :-O

Toonoryu and Mukashi share the lead with non-identical teams but the same score (the drone has fewer losses).

The tables are updated for Day 14.

Toonoryu leads by one point.

Mukashi, Chishafuwaku, and Kuroimori are one, two, and three points behind but any of them could gain enough points to win.

For everyone else - better luck next time.

The tables have been updated with the final standings and results.

Thanks for playing everyone!
